Motivation and Motivational Climate

‘An evidenced based conversation on motivation in elite track & field athletics with novel insights from top-level athletes and coaches. In this research informed presentation by PhD researcher and applied practitioner, Matthew Cullen, you will learn all about:

  • Elite athlete conceptions of motivation
  • The impact that an athlete’s support team can have on their motivation.
  • Coach conceptions of elite athlete motivation
  • Coaching behaviours that positively impact athletes’ motivation.

Time will be given to discuss implications for athletes and an opportunity for critical reflection of coaching practice in relation to motivation and motivational climate. 

About your speaker:

Matthew Cullen (BSc hons, MSc, QTS) is a PhD Researcher at the University of Birmingham, England. His PhD research is focused on understanding the motivation and motivational climate of elite track & field athletes/coaches. Through his work, he supports elite multinational coaches to develop more empowering & less disempowering coaching behaviours through online delivery of the Empowering Coaching ™ training programme & maintenance of a subsequent Community of Practice.

He has spent the last 8 years working at Aspire Academy (Doha, Qatar) facilitating the delivery of sport psychology support programmes for student-athletes & more recently supported staff to develop coaching & learning environments that were psychologically adaptive. Prior to this he worked as a Physical Education Teacher in the UK and also spent 7 years working in an applied practitioner role at Liverpool Football Club in their Academy.

He has run 13 marathons on 6 continents, just the Antarctic to go!’
