BMC GRAND PRIX WATFORD REPORT

Jemma Reekie and Kate Axford are both hoping that the Adidas/sportsshoes.com Grand Prix meeting will be a springboard for the rest of the season.

With the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow looming large Olympian Reekie’s career intentions are a little more immediate than Axford, who was returning to the track for the first time in two years.

But both were unanimous in expressing their delight to be back racing after suffering setbacks in their plans.

“I am happy to be out here racing healthy and I want a lot more from this season,” said Reekie, after winning the women’s 800m A race in a season’s best time of 1:58.41.

“The build-up to Glasgow has been rocky as I had a fall at the start of the season and got concussion but I have got an amazing team around me who helped me get back.

“Last week was the first time I felt like I was back to myself so I was happy to come out out and almost feel like starting the season again.”

Reekie suffered that heavy fall racing over 800m in Poland at the end of May and while she raced again less than a week later over 1500m in the Rome Diamond League, (11th in the 1500m, 4:05.39), the appearance in Watford was her first race since then.

“I came to Watford as it was convenient and just up the road from Brighton and I have not been here since I was a kid,” added Reekie.

“It was good to be back here and hopefully I’ll be back more often.”

While Reekie’s time was just outside Phoebe Gill’s 2024 BMC Allcomers record of 1:58.08 for an all female race it was a BMC Watford record, beating Khahisa Mhlanga’s previous best of 1:59.35 set three years ago.

Her time was also inside the UKA’s qualification standard of 1:59.80 for the European Championships in Birmingham next month.

Those were all reasons to put a smile on Reekie’s face and it was clear she was enjoying being back on the track.

“It has been a tough time for Jemma since Paris 18 months ago and there were a number of things colliding at the same time for her,” said coach Jon Bigg.

“I know how hard she works in training and we have put a lot of work in to finding a way back into racing again because while her training has been the roof we haven’t been able to get that out in races.

“I think Saturday was the first big step forward for her and it was wonderful to see her do that.

“Obviously there is still a long way to go but it was a good stepping stone and it just shows how good the BMC is in putting on these types of events that can cater for a runner looking to break 2mins 05secs while also catering for an Olympian who has run 1min 55secs.

“That environment to fulfil runner’ ambitions is brilliant.’

Axford was a popular winner of the women’s 3000m, powering clear of the field in the final kilometre to clock 8:55.03, just outside her lifetime best of 8:52.19 set two years ago.

That was the 27-year-old’s last season on the track and coincidentally her final race of that summer was at Watford when she ran 4:11.39 in a BMC Gold Standard meeting.

Since then she had raced only three times, twice on the road and one cross country event in 2025, before returning to action on Saturday.

“I have not quit!” said a defiant and happy Axford.

“A foot injury had been the root problem and I got to the stage  where I had to make the decision to have surgery, which I did in January this year.

“I have been back running since March and I have now enjoyed two months of decent sessions and the signs are good.

“I know this is a hard sport and you are easily forgotten but I have kept working hard behind the scenes and I am now looking forward to the future.

“I really enjoyed being back at Watford and the BMC races are great.

“It was lovely to see other runners like Matt Stonier winning as well as he has been out for a long time.

“It is such a positive environment and I am now feeling very excited and relishing the chance to race regularly and enjoy it.”

Indeed, Stonier was racing for the first time in three years so his delight at winning the 1500m B race was all too evident.

“I am so happy to be back and feel just a little over-whelmed,” said Stonier.

“Just making the start line was victory for me and anything else was a bonus.”

Back to the women’s 3000m and Georgie Grgec’s BMC All comers all female race record of 8:52.33 set last year survived but the 16-year-old U20 female record of 9:13.58 held by Joanne Harvey was broken.

Recently crowned England U20s champion Katie Pye is the proud new holder as the 19-year-old finished fourth in 9:11.54, her fastest time since her PB of 9:09.67 as an U17 two years ago, and importantly under the World U20 qualification time.

James McMurray took the men’s 3000m with a PB of 7:53.48, just eclipsing his previous best of 7:53.97 set when winning the BMC Indoor GP at Sheffield in January.

“I wanted to go faster but then the wind had really picked up by the time of the race so the race was far more cagey,” explained McMurray.

“Overall I am pretty pleased and hopefully this will kick-start the second half of my season.”

Will Battershill’s second half of the season was focused exclusively on qualifying for the European Championships but those hopes now hang by a slender thread after he missed the qualifying standard of 8mins 20secs, winning at a canter in 8:23.89.

It was his second fastest of the season just outside the 8:22.97 he ran when finishing runner-up in the Novuna UK Athletics Championships last month.

“I am feeling gutted as this was the last chance for me to run the qualifying for the Euros,” said Battershill.

“Close again but I didn’t quite get there. Now I have to wait and see.”

Dillon Millard, who will be heading to Oregon for the World U20 Championships, did a good as one of the early pacemakers and Mark Pearce also chipped in before Battershill surged clear.

But will it ultimately be enough to earn him a ticket to Birmingham?

“It has felt like a nearly season for me which I have been doing for a few years now,” added Battershill.

“I am being as good a I can be without taking that step but I really want that place in the Euros.”

As for the men’s 800m Archie Davis, who is heading to the Commonwealth Games to race the mile for England, had a confidence boost with a season’s best time of 1:46.89 to finish runner-up.

Victory went to Adrian Engster of Germany, who is studying in Sheffield, in 1:46.63.

The 1500m titles both went to overseas runners with Benoit Campion of France, who works with the M11 coaching group,  winning the men’s race in 3:40.85 and Carmen Cernjul of Sweden claiming the women’s prize in 4:10.61.

“I went for it but it was hard in the conditions but I am happy to win the race,” said Cernjul, who will race the World U20s next month.
