ST MARY’S GRAND PRIX REPORT
WE are thrilled to report that unequivocally and, we reckon, with little argument that the Sir Mo Farah Track at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, witnessed the greatest women’s 1500m race in the history of the British Milers Club.
That’s undoubtedly a bold statement but the stats back up the claim in what was the fifth and final event of a highly successful 2026 Adidas/sportsshoes.com Grand Prix series:
So just how good was that women’s 1500m A race?
* It featured a new BMC female race only record of 4:01.78 by 20-year-old winner Ava Lloyd
* The top four women broke 4mins 03secs
* The top nine finished under 4mins 05secs
* The top 13 broke 4mins 08secs
“As Matthew (Fraser Moat) pointed out to me, in 63 years of the BMC only seven female athletes had ever broken 4mins 05secs for the 1500m,” said Grand Prix director Tim Brennan.
“At St Mary’s we had nine women finishing inside 4:05. Unquestionably it was the best women’s 1500m race we have ever staged.”
It was somehow fitting that the great man himself, Sir Mo, was watching trackside as a spectator and enjoying a magnificent feast of racing that delivered results which would stand proudly against some of the best meetings across Europe this summer.
Lloyd’s victory was dramatic as much as historic as she came through strongly in the final 50 metres to overtake Lucia Stafford of Canada, who was fourth and ahead of her in the mile at the Commonwealth Games.
Lloyd’s winning time carved five seconds off her personal best lifting her to fifth in the UK Rankings while behind her there were also PBs for fellow British runners Sarah Calvert (4:02.25), the UK champion and Kate Axford (4:03.76).
“That is a big breakthrough for Ava and well deserved,” said BMC President and well-respected coach Norman Poole.
“She also looked very strong in the last 30 metres which suggests that there is maybe more to come. Still only 20 that was a very impressive run.
“I think it also shows that if we can get enough good standard women on the start line we can do that.
“If you only have one or two very good runners it becomes more difficult to get those sort of results. Plus on Saturday the women went with the pace and were fully committed.
“In fact, across the whole evening I think we saw that commitment in so many races.
“It was a remarkable evening of middle distance running.”
Indeed it was and another statistic backs up that claim with a total of 33 male runners breaking 1min 50secs across six of the 10 races.
“That broke the record of 27 at Watford last month,” added Brennan.
“In addition, it was the first time that the winner of the F race (Jordan Chambers, of Tonbridge, with a PB of 1:49.22) finished inside 1:50 as well.
“And we also lost three more potential 1:45 men in the A race due to a big fall (Elliott Savage, Finley McLear and American Cass Elliott sadly all failed to finish).”
But back to that fantastic women’s 1500m. Lloyd admitted that when she arrived at the track she could sense it was going to be a special night of racing.
“I have grown up with the BMC races and I could feel a real buzz when I got to St Mary’s,” said Lloyd.
“I was super excited about the start list in my race and also I have never seen so many spectators at a Grand Prix meeting. The atmosphere was brilliant.
“I knew I was in good shape after the Commies (Lloyd was sixth in the mile) and I knew Lucia (Stafford, of Canada) was a brave runner and would go with the pacemaker.
“It seemed like everyone was up for the race. The race was a bit of a blur and while it was hard I knew when we got to the bell that I was not feeling bad at all.
“I wasn’t expecting to win but in the last 200m I had a sniff and went for it.
“I was shocked with the time. I thought maybe I could run 4:02/03 but to run 4:01 and get the BMC record, that’s just crazy.
“And to see the results afterwards was insane. It was a brilliant race.”
The women’s B race wasn’t bad either with Belgrave’s Nancie Bowley clocking a PB of 4:10.72 for victory, a time that would have claimed many A race wins in the past.
A special mention also to 18-year-old Maisey Bellwood for slicing over three seconds off her PB to win the C race in 4:16.58 with the next three also recording PBs and diping inside 4:20.
The men couldn’t quite match the exploits of the women but according to Matthew Fraser Moat the results of the A race, which saw the top seven beat 3:38.0 and the top 10 finish inside 3:38.50, are only eclipsed by two other BMC 1500m races.
Firstly, by Tooting last year, which was won by Adam Fogg in a BMC members record of 3:34.11 with nine men under 3:40 and secondly the 2024 Grand Prix at Bury won by American Cooper Teare, who won in a BMC All Comers record of 3:33.95 with the top 11 cracking 3mins 40secs.
But that shouldn’t detract from Henry McLuckie’s victory in 3:36.71 with just 0.09secs then covering runner-up Jack Higgins and Callum Elson.
“Callum came around with 200m to go and I didn’t react the best to but I knew I would finish strong down the home straight,” said McLuckie.
“I was at University here and Craig (Winrow, who was meeting director with Brennan) has done a lot for me down the years so I really wanted to put on a show tonight and get the win.”
The B race was also very impressive with winner Biruk Aduna Kebede, coached by Poole, running a PB by three seconds of 3:36.65 to lead the top nine finishers under 3:40. In addition to Kebede, still only 20, eight other runners also recorded lifetime bests.
In the other races it was good to see all the winners of the C and D races winning inside 3:42, E and F inside 3:46 with the G, H and I beating 3:50.
Notwithstanding the fall in the men’s 800m A race David Race, who has been improving steadily all summer, ran impressively to win in a PB of 1:45.31.
“Obviously I am happy with the PB but also a little frustrated as I know from my training I am capable of quicker,” said Race.
“At the start of the season the aim was to run 1:44 and I don’t want to end the season until I achieve that so I will be coming to Tooting.”
With the high quality entry equally split across two races Samuel Pihlstrom of Sweden, their current 800m and 1500m champion, won the nominal B race in a PB of 1:46.04.
And as Brennan said earlier just look at the winning times of the next four races; Louis Low-Beer of Switzerland clocking a PB of 1:47.31 to win the C; Australian Tom Forster a PB of 1:47.87 to win the D; Wycombe’s Raihan Lenoire winning the E race in a PB of 1:48.57 and finally Chambers’ PB success in the F race.
It was wonderful to see the name of O’Sullivan winning a Grand Prix A race with 24-year-old Ireland international Sophie claiming the 800m A title in a PB of 1:59.65, her first time under two minutes.
“Her mum (Sonia) still holds our BMC mile record of 4:27.79 set in Oxford back in 2004 so it was nice to see Sophie doing so well,” said Brennan.
The 2024 Paris Olympian and 2023 European U23 1500m gold medallist has become a fine runner in her own right and used Sunday as a warm-up for the 1500m at the European Championships in Birmingham this week.
“It was good and very pleased to get under two minutes,” said Sullivan, who broke her mum’s championship record over 1500m with 4:05.62 this summer.
Again the B race was impressive with Sweden’s Mia Barnett slicing a second off her PB with 2:01.98 for victory.
And to cap things off a final words from Brennan.
“It was just a fantastic meeting and enormous credit to everyone involved, in particular Craig Winrow who worked so hard for his first time in charge,” said Brennan.
“Now it is over to the MarketAxess Record Breaker meeting at Tooting (August 19th) to see what sort of show the runners can put on there. The challenge has been thrown down to see if they can repeat the success of last year.”
