Teenager Ethan Hussey moved to second on the UK All-Time List for under 17 men after improving his personal best to 3mins 46.45secs in the British Milers’ Club Grand Prix meeting at SportCity, Manchester, this evening.
Running in the A race the 16-year-old from Leeds finished strongly to carve almost four seconds from his personal best set last year and move up 16 places – over-taking the likes of Steve Cram and Charles Da’Vall Grice in the process – in the lists with only Matthew Shirling ahead of him on 3:44.11.
Hussey finished sixth in the race which was won by Matthew Wigelsworth in a PB of 3:44.03.

Another top performance came in the 800m as 18-year-old Oliver Dustin not only raced to his first Grand Prix A victory but also set a PB of 1:48.01 which took him inside the European Championships Under 20 qualifying standard of 1:49.00
Runner-up Alex Botterill also finished inside that standard clocking 1:48.46.
Other juniors to achieve qualifying standards for the European U20s in Sweden included Erin Wallace in the 1500m (4:18.94), Grace Brock in the 5000m (16:08.82) and Rory Leonard in the 5000m (14:16.35), with the latter pair both making their debuts at the distance.
There was also an impressive win for teenager Daniel Joyce in the 800m C race with his PB time of 1:50.92 lifting him to second in the UK Under 17 men’s Rankings while in the women’s C race City of Lisburn teenager Victoria Lightbody carved three seconds off her best to go top of the UK Under 17 Rankings with 2:09.48.
Last but not least A race winner Petros Surafel just crept inside the European Under 23 Championships qualifying mark of 13mins 53secs for the 5000m – by 0.21secs!

800m A-B

Oliver Dustin had the look of a man who could barely believe that he had won his first Grand Prix A race.
In one of the top races of the night the 18-year-old Border AC runner produced arguably his best ever performance to defeat junior rival Alex Botterill and former European Youth champion George Mills.
Furthermore, he marked that notable win, his first Grand Prix A success, with a personal best of 1:48.01 to go top of the UK Under 20 Rankings – plus sixth fastest overall – and dip well inside the European Junior Championship qualifying standard of 1:49.
Not bad for a young man who just a year ago placed ninth in the C race at the same meeting in 1:56.20!
“I was panicking a bit as I found myself in last place after 400m and had to come through from a long way back,” said Dustin, who is coached by Graeme Mason.
“But that showed me I have the strength and speed in the last 100m to pull through so I am really happy with that.”
Botterill held on for second with Mills third and Preston’s Tiarnan Crorken fourth in a PB as he broke 1:50 for the first time -just a week after breaking 1:51 for the first time in the Loughborough International.
In the women’s A race Lynsey Sharp duly delivered the victory expected of her as favourite but this was a strange event.
The absence of Mari Smith on the start line- she turned up too late due to the traffic chaos on the M6 and switched to the 1500m – clearly changed the dynamic of the race.
We’ll never know whether Smith would have followed the pacemaker through a sub 60 first lap but no-one apart from Hallamshire junior Saskia Huxham made an effort and Sharp was happy to sit in the pack with her rivals, including top junior Keely Hodgkinson.
Huxham continued to lead until the 600m mark when Sharp’s tactics became crystal clear as she moved swiftly through the gears to unleash a determined final 200m to clinch victory from Hodgkinson.
“I didn’t come here for a fast time but to take out something different from the race,” said Sharp.
“I wanted to hold back and not take the lead until the last 200m and then go for it. It was good that Keely was behind me because she is someone who I have been watching through her junior career.
“I am happy with my effort this evening and the race worked well for me. “
Hodgkinson got a season’s best as she chased Sharp hard to the line – it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if she had got the jump first – but was left a little frustrated.
“I would like to have got the qualifying time for the European Juniors (2:06.00) but it was a good run and pretty pleased overall,” said Hodgkinson.
“I really pushed it hard in the last 200m chasing Lynsey. She is a hero of mine and I have followed her career for a long time now. Hopefully I can do as well as she has done!”

No-one could accuse Dan Mees of not taking the initiative in the men’s B race as he made a strong move into the lead down the back straight.
Had the 20-year-old gone too early? Not at all as the Newham & Essex Beagle looked strong and in control until he crossed the line in a season’s best of 1:50.79.
“I have just finished my exams at Kent University so now I can concentrate on my running for a while,” said Mees.
“I am a lot faster and strong than at this stage last season so I’m confident I can get under 1:50 and improve my PB (1:49.84).
“The British U23s is my target and I’ll be looking to make the final, though that is going to be incredibly tough.”
Runner-up Harry Russell was rewarded for his chase to the line with a PB of 1:51.25.
For women’s B race winner Leah Barrow the time of 2:08.85 was incidental as she returned to competitive racing with a confidence-boosting victory.
“I had to take off three months last summer following a hip operation and the comeback has been really slow going over the winter,” said Barrow.
“But importantly everything feels fine now and I am just looking forward to getting back to where I was last season. I’ll need to sharpen up though as tactically I got myself into some bad positions!
“But it is just nice to get back to winning a BMC race and now I can move forward from this.”
Once she got herself into the lead down the home straight Barrow used all her experience and strength to stay in front despite a strong challenge from Katie Kirk and Georgia Yearby.

800m C-H

Two-times English Schools’ champion Daniel Joyce smashed his PB with a superb victory in the C race.
The 16-year-old Tynedale athlete, who is coached by Peter Venus, gave an early season reminder of his class as he carved over two seconds from his 2018 best with 1:50.92 – to go second in the UK Under 17 Men’s Rankings.
“That is only my second 800m this season as I have a lot of GCSE exams and I know there is a lot more to come,” said Joyce.
Junior Rocco Zaman-Browne also notched up a PB of 1:51.66 in second.
Bolton’s Jonothan Kay admitted he was hoping for a quicker time after edging out Cardiff junior David Locke to win the D race in 1:52.70.
“It is my first proper race of the season and I was looking for 1:50 but I got caught up in a lot of traffic and spent most of the race in lane 2,” said Kay.
“I’ll be looking to beat my PB (1:52.24) and got a lot quicker this season.”
In contrast Locke should be pleased with his PB of 1:52.96 as should the next four men home, including two more juniors, as they also ran PBs.

It was barely a vest’s width that separated E race winner Dan Wilde from Taunton with runner-up Harry Doran and with Matthew Harris barely a stride behind in third this was arguably the tightest finish of the day.
Wilde struck hard down the home straight but couldn’t shake off either Doran or Harris as just 0.16secs covered the top three.
Wilde will take encouragement from his win as Doran was the fastest man in the field with 1:49.41 to his name.

Junior Luke Farrant made the short trip from his Stockport base and was involved in one of the best finishes of the day as he hung on determinedly for victory in the F race.
Farrant kicked off the bend and had to dig deep to hold off attacks from Tom Dodd and Joe Ewing as just 0.45secs covered the top three with Farrant and Dodd both setting PBs.
“That is my first 800m of the season so I am happy with that,” said Farrant, who improved from 1:56 to 1:53.26.
Michael Proffitt was also racing his first 800m of the season and narrowly missed his PB of 1:57.70 in a tight finish to the G race as he held off a strong challenge from Cameron Cass.
“It took me all season last year to get down to 1:57 and now I have opened up close to that so it is an encouraging start and I’ll be looking to go a lot faster,” said Proffitt, who is a member of Bristol & West AC.
Josh White made it a good day for his training group based in Peterborough as he sprinted to victory in the H race which was matched by Dan Mees’ success in the B race.
“I’m over the moon with that,” said White, who clocked 1:57.99.
“I have put in a lot more training recently and it is paying off.”

Ilkley junior Bethan Morley, who is a member of Andrew Henderson’s coaching group and City of Lisburn teenager Victoria Lightbody dominated the C race.
Morley took the honours with an impressive victory in a personal best time of 2:08.28, clipping a second-and-a-half off her best to go eighth in the UK Under 20 Rankings with Lightbody just over a second behind in 2:09.48, also a PB by over three seconds – and quick enough to put her top of the UK Under 17 Rankings

Teenager Laure Kidukula is clearly a promising talent as she won the D race in some style in a PB of 2:12.32.
“My PB was 2:14.57 before and this is my first win in a BMC race,” said Kidukula, who leaps to fifth in the UK Rankings.
The 15-year-old was discovered by the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation – who was watching trackside with some pride – and is now coached by Diane’s husband Vicente.
Runner-up Molly Butterworth was also rewarded with a PB of 2:12.94.

1500m A-B

Teenager Ethan Hussey may have grabbed the headlines with his startling PB in sixth place as he moved to second on the UK All-Time List for under 17 men but ahead of him the first five men all notched up lifetime bests led by champion Matthew Wigelsworth.
The 22-year-old Preston runner wasn’t among the favourites with a best of 3mins 47.24secs but he chose his moment well to smash that with interest and claim his first Grand Prix A win after a good tussle with training partner James Young.
“To be honest I feel like I should be running 3:43 and really should have done it last year so I came here determined to get a PB,” said Wigelsworth after winning in 3:44.03.
“I train with James at Preston, though he has a different coach (Young is with Lindsay Dunn, Wigelsworth works with Andy Bibby). I tried to latch onto him and fortunately had another gear to use so I am very pleased to win and now hopefully can push on and get that PB down again.”
As well as PBs for the first six, 11 of the top 12 finishers ran lifetime bests, including 2018 UK No 1 at Under 17 level Kane Elliott with 3:46.83secs though he needs 3:45.00 for the Euro Juniors qualifying.
Runners in the B race also took advantage of the benign conditions with seven of the 11-strong field recording PBs, including the top four led by winner Jonathan Shields.
“I ran 3:49 last year so it is nice to come out and get a PB of 3:47,” said Shields. “I wanted a decent race and that is what I got.”
Shields left it late only over-hauling local Sale Harrier Euan Gilchrist in the final 50 metres.
The women’s A race saw a welcome return to form for Clare Tarplee after a terrific last lap duel with Amelia Quirk.
Tarplee is feeling her way back into competitive racing after some bad injuries so wasn’t particularly concerned about the clock.
“I am coming back from a stress fracture and then a torn Achilles tendon both within the last year so I am just finding my feet again,” said Tarplee.
“This was my second race outdoors (she ran 4:21.72 in a University of Birmingham mid-week open earlier this month) and I was just concentrating on racing and a win is a win, so that is a bonus.”
Tarplee was limping after the race and was hoping it was just a touch of cramp in her calf rather than anything more sinister.
Quirk was rewarded with a season’s best and in third Giffnock North junior Erin Wallace was well inside the European Juniors qualifying standard.
It was good to hear from Exeter Harrier Molly Canham after her win in the B race that she is enjoying her running again.
The 17-year-old has been in the sport for several years now racing at a decent level but admitted that in 2018 it was becoming a chore.
“I raced last year by my head wasn’t in it and everything was half-hearted,” said Canham.
“I think I had fallen out of love with the sport but having stepped away a but I now realise I still love running and I really enjoyed the cross country season.
“This is my first Grand Prix event and I opted for the 1500m as it felt like less pressure than doing an 800m. My best before was 4:31 so to win in 4:24.49 is brilliant.
“I wasn’t expecting anything like that so I am very pleased.”
Canham has never been afraid to lead from the front and she showed strength and maturity to control her effort and still finish strong with North Down’s Rachel Gibson running a PB in second.

1500m C-E

The winners of the men’s C, D and E races all celebrated with personal bests and a total of 22 runners from 42 finishers enjoyed lifetime bests.
James Heneghan, one of the many runners who came up from Cardiff from James Thie’s coaching group, won the C race with juniors Oliver Barbaresi and Ethan O’Shea claiming success in the D and E events.
Five of the top seven women in the C race recorded PBs including Ripon’s Mena Scatchard as she chased home fellow teenager Maya Todd McIntyre.

2000m STEEPLECHASE

Dan Owen’s victory has given him the confidence that he can finally break nine minutes for the 3k event by the end of the summer.
The Cheltenham & County Harrier committed himself from the start and with Jamie Grose chasing the pair quickly moved clear of the field.
A strong final 800m saw Owen break clear for victory in a personal best of 5:47.23 with Grose just over seven seconds adrift.
“We had a great pacemaker and that helped so much as it took the pressure off,” said 25-year-old Owen.
“My previous PB was 5:49 set in a Midland League match when I virtually ran on my own so this was great. Now I need to keep that form for another 1k and I’ll get under nine minutes at last.
“I am definitely feeling a lot stronger and the aim now is to get the 8mins 55secs qualifying standard for the British Championships.”
It was Owen’s first Grand Prix A victory and came on less than ideal preparation as he arrived just 20 minutes before the start as he, like so many others coming up to Manchester from the south, got caught up in an accident on the M6 which saw traffic grind to a halt for two hours.
Interesting to note that of the eight finishers seven ran personal bests.
There was also a PB for the winner of the women’s 2k steeplechase as Ireland runner Niamh Kearney broke seven minutes for the first time to make her trip more than worthwhile.
“I am very happy with that,” said Kearney.
“I did an 800m in one of the Grand Prix events a few years ago but this is my first A race and as it is so hard to find 2k steeplechase events I was keen to come over. It is nice to win.”

5000m A RACES

Running with economy of effort and almost perfect pace judgement the men’s A race was won by Thames Valley Harrier Petros Surafel with a PB of 13:52.79 which was inside the European Under 23 Championships qualifying standard.
Just being the operative word as he snuck under by 0.21secs with a fast last lap and big sprint down the home straight as the announcer gave him a running countdown.
“I did it just!” said Surafel. “That was the plan but I also wanted to win the race so didn’t want to get into the lead too early.”
It was keenly contested race early on with fellow under 23 runners Tom Mortimer and Jake Smith also anxious to keep the pace honest as they attacked the 13:53.00 target.
Mortimer was the first to drop away but Smith, along with Lucian Allison, were still with Surafel with two laps to go. Neither could live with the winner’s final lap burst but were rewarded with PBs though Smith will feel frustrated at missing the 14 minutes barrier by just 0.45secs.
Behind the leaders Morpeth junior Rory Leonard made an excellent debut as he showed terrific pace judgement to finish strongly in a time of 14:16.35, well inside the Euro target of 14:20.
“I am dead happy with that on my debut,” said Leonard.
“I must admit it was a bit surreal to see lap counter saying nine to go but I just focused on the race and switched off looking at the laps until the final 1200M.
“It was job done!”
Job done, too, for Jess Judd as she eventually shook off the limpet-like attentions of Clare Duck in the women’s 5000m.
The pair dominated the race though it took British international Judd until the final lap before she finally shook off her shadow to win in 15:39.00, only four seconds off her PB.
She looked pleased but declined to comment; clearly intent on letting her feet doing the talking.
No such reticence from Cornwall junior Grace Brock who was rewarded for her long journey from her Penzance home with a European U20 qualifying time of 16:08.82 on her debut at the distance.
“I’m over the moon with that!” said Brock.
“The plan was to settle in the pack with the aim of running around 16:20. I felt good until 3k but then it starts to creep up on you and those last two laps were very hard.
“But to run 16:08 first time out is way better than I expected.”

5000m B-C

“That went better than I expected,” said Luke Betts after winning his debut over 5000m on the track with 14:23.99 in the B race.
“I had done 14:40 on the road but this was a bit different for sure especially as I was running on my own for the last six laps.”
The Paul Roden-coached runner from Sale Harriers Manchester coped pretty well with that challenge as he finished well clear of Denmark athlete Rasmus Gregersen as the top five all ran PBs and 12 of the 19 finishers recorded lifetime bests.

Long-time leader Callum O’Neill had victory wrenched from his grasp after a devastating final lap by Leigh runner William Rawson.
Newbury runner O’Neill looked to have the C race wrapped up after building up a decent lead in the second half of the race, at one point enjoying a 40 metres gap to his pursuers.
But Rawson had other ideas and as O’Neill faltered, he moved through the gears and scorched into the lead off the final bend to win in 14:46.87, slashing six seconds off his best.
“I didn’t think I would get O’Neill but I thought it was worth giving a try and with 400m remaining I heard Dave Norman, a friend of mine, shout at me to go for it so I did as I had a bit left,” said Rawson.
Rawson’s last lap split would be impressive and O’Neill was gracious in defeat, not doubt helped by a huge PB as he broke 15 minutes for the first time with 14:48.33. Eleven of the 18 finishers clocked PBs
