REPORT

THEY came looking for fast times and that is exactly what Justin Davies and Ava Lloyd got in the 800m A races on Saturday evening.

A year ago at the same meeting 21-year-old Davies just didn’t feel it and while he won the A race the time was only a modest 1:49.84.

But fast-forward 12 months and a confident-looking Davies stuck like a limpet to the pacemaker, surged clear down the back straight and maintained his form to cross the line in a personal best time of 1:46.06, clipping 0.64secs off the time he ran when winning the Grand Prix B race at Watford.

“I’m so happy with that,” said Davies.

“Martin (Rush his coach) and I were hoping for a small PB but didn’t expect that at all. But the pace-making was perfect and I felt strong on the second lap.

“I mean, it was damn hard work but now I know there is definitely a 1:45 in me this season, maybe in Italy where I am racing in 10 days’ time. I’d also love to get a sub 3:40 before the end of the season so plenty still to go for.”

There are also the England Senior Championships, in which he is the reigning 800m champion having won at Chelmsford last year so definitely Davies is not finished yet.

Likewise for junior William Rabjohns as the 18-year-old went top of the UK Rankings – displacing Henry Jonas who finished just behind him on Saturday – with a sparking PB of 1:47.22 to finish second, eclipsing his previous best of 1:48.09 set when winning the C race at Watford last month.

That time was also inside the qualifying standard of 1mins 48secs for the World Juniors so putting him into the mix for Peru.

“I can’t believe it,” said Rabjohns. “I just felt so strong today.”

Lloyd definitely has plenty to run for as she shapes up for the World Junior Championships in Peru. The 18-year-old, who boasts a pretty useful training group including Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Bell among many others in Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows squad, smashed her 2023 PB by virtually two seconds with a victory in 2:03.56 following a terrific battle with American Emily Richards and Gemma Finch down the home straight as just 0.4secs separated the trio.

That PB gave Lloyd the qualifying standard of 2:04 for Peru in addition to the 1500m time of  4:15.0, having won the Watford Grand Prix A race in a PB of 4:12.07, those times putting her second in the UK U20 Rankings at both distances behind a certain Phoebe Gill who has other concerns this summer in Paris.

“I have been doing lots of 1500m races this summer as the World Juniors has been my main aim so it was good to come out for some sharpening work and run a big PB today and finish so strongly,” said Lloyd.

“It was the first time that Jenny has seen me race live this season and it was so cool having her at the track. Training with the group is amazing, even if I am at the back most of the time!”

Behind Lloyd teenager Bethany Trow finished strongly to dip inside 2:06 for the first time with a PB of 2:05.27 for fourth place.

In the men’s B race Joseph Owen admitted he finally clicked as he ended a two-year wait for a PB of 1:47.69 to clinch victory after going out hard with the pacemaker.

“I ran the same way at Watford but fell apart (he finished 5th in the C race, 1:50.10) so I went back to do an intensive block of mid-season training and this was my first race since then so it has clearly worked!” said Owen.

“It has been a big target for me to break 1:48 and to get a PB after two years feels long over-due. That is a big confidence boost for me.”

Dublin-based Ireland runner Nadia Power finished well outside her lifetime best of 2:01.01 but a season’s best of 2:06.07 to win the women’s B race was also a confidence boost for her.

“Unfortunately, I have had three years of injuries and struggle so I’m just pleased to come out and win and race strongly,” said Power. “The times will come.”

Blustery conditions early on didn’t help the runners but Jack Dickson (1:49.43), Archie Lawson (1:52.00) and junior Edward Enser (1:53.46) all ran PBs to win the C, E and H races respectively while Catherine Gallagher posted a PB of 2:10.56 to win the women’s E race.

1500m RACES

Bethan Morley ended her Grand Prix season with another impressive performance, just missing her PB of 4:11.84 set when winning at Sportcity, with a 4:12.29 for second place behind Christina Aragon of America.

Morley took on the pace when the pacemaker stepped aside and while the 22-year-old dug in deep could not shake off Aragon, a former World Juniors bronze medallist who recently set a lifetime best of 4:05.36 in the heats of the American Olympic trials before finishing 10th in the final.

“I really gave it a good go and stuck with the pacemaker,” said Morley. “But then I found myself at the front leading on my own and I paid for that. But overall it has been a good season.”

It certainly has as Morley won at Sportcity and Loughborough (PB of 2:02.76 in the 800m, was fifth in the 1500m at Watford before Saturday’s second. She also finished 10th at the UK Championships.

“I won’t be around for the final Grand Prix at Bury as I’m off to the University of Florida in America and really looking forward to that challenge now,” she added.

She may cross paths with Aragon, though she is based on the west coast at Oregon, again and the two can they reminisce about the Grand Prix series as the American thoroughly enjoyed her first experience of a BMC meeting.

“I have never raced in Europe so I have come over to get some experience as my ultimate aim is to make a senior US team for  a championships,” said Aragon.

“This is a great meet. It is very professional but also a lot of fun, not so intense as some of the meets in America and that helps you to race well. I have really enjoyed it and I appreciate the BMC having me here to race.”

Behind Morley it was good to see the trio of Kate Axford (4:12.78), Elise Thorner (4:13.63) and Tian Wilson (4:13.66) all run PBs and move into the top 25 of the UK Rankings.

The top three in the women’s B race also all clocked PBs led home by 23-year-old Sarah Wilson, who trains with Justin Davies in Martin Rush’s group in Bath.

“My best before was 4:27.50 so that is a big improvement so I’m really pleased with that,” said Wilson.

“I have run lots of PBs this summer so overall I’m really pleased with my season.”

Joseph Tuffin jogged to the track for his warm-up having stayed in the city after graduating from Birmingham University and would have enjoyed the warm-down home after claiming his first Grand Prix A race victory.

“I had a disappointing run at the UK Championships so it was good to bounce back from that and get my first Grand Prix A win,” said Tuffin.

“I’m still hoping for another fast time (he ran his PB of 3:39.90 in Brussels, in May) and will be going to Tooting Bec (the BMC Record Breaker meeting on July 24th) as that has become renowned as a quick meeting with good athletes so I think there could be quite a few of us there.

“But already I have run sub 3:40 and done a sub 4 mile so it has been a good year.”

Meeting director Luker Gunn was delighted to see Liam Rawlings, whom he coaches, win the men’s B race after committing himself from the start and holding on to his advantage on a tough last lap.

“That was hard work in the conditions and I was hurting a lot,” said Rawlings, who has now run all the GPs this summer winning the 5000m B race at Sportcity, placing 12th in the 5k B at Watford and then placing sixth in the 3000m A race at Loughborough University.

In the other races there were PBs for Adam Dray (3:48.31), Samuel Hopkins (3:50.78) and Robert Crowley (3:51.74) in the D, E and F races respectively while Emily McNichol (4:30.65) and teenager Lizzie Sheridan (4:32.81) recorded bests to win the women’s C and D races.

Sheridan, still only 15, slashed virtually eight seconds off her PB for her first GP victory but now swaps her spikes for football boots – she is also a member of the QPR Academy – with a school trip to South Africa.

“Tonight was so much fun,” said Sheridan.

3000m RACES

British junior international Innes Fitzgerald couldn’t quite hold on to Australian Holly Campbell in the closing couple of laps but their terrific battle resulted in both women running lifetime bests as they both broke nine minutes.

Fitzgerald, 18, not only beat her two-year-old best with 8:57.32 but also improved her own BMC U20s record to strengthen her position at the top of the UK Rankings.

The manner of that run has given her a lot of confidence going into a couple of very important weeks,

“I’ve got my final English Schools’ Championships next weekend and I’ve got me eye on Paula Radliffe’s senior girls’ 3000m record of 9:07 and after that it is the U20 Championships,” said Fitzgerald.

“I’m pleased to finally get my PB as it was over-due and that has given me a lot of confidence.”

Campbell was delighted with her win after being pushed hard by the British junior and her PB time of 8:53.63 was only a shade outside Jess Judd’s BMC record of 8:52.73 set on the same track three years ago.

“I’ve not raced in the UK before and this meet was awesome,” said Campbell.

“There was a really cool, relaxed vibe and I enjoyed it. I’ve not raced the 3k much so it was good to come out and get a PB.”

Likewise her twin sister Paige was rewarded with a PB of 9:08.11 in third despite racing on her own for much of the race.

Harry Wakefield is clearly benefitting from training alongside young speedster Evan Grime, who ran a UK Age 15 record of 3:47.72 at Loughborough last month and earn selection for the European U18 Championships, as he won the men’s A race in a lifetime best of  7:56.18 to smash the PB of 8:07.24 he set when winning the B race at this meeting last year.

“Evan is awesome and with virtually a 20-year age difference between us that makes it quite an unusual training group but I enjoy it,” said Wakefield.

“I’m pleased with the PB but unfortunately it is one second off my coach’s (Ian Grime) best!”

Junior Biruk Aduna Kebede and Tomer Tarrango both dipped inside eight minutes in second and third respectively with further PBs for Jack O’Farrell and Matthew Ransden in fourth and fifth as conditions became perfect later into the evening.

Indeed, the first six in the B race and the top three in the C all recorded PBs with juniors Reiss Marshall (8:11.24) and Ethan Primett claiming the honours.

2K STEEPLECHASE

Fresh from his win in the 2000m steeplechase Mark Pearce was quick to pay tribute to trials winner Phil Norman, who has announced his retirement from the event having failed to win selection for the Olympic Games in Paris.

“Phil has been a huge inspiration to me,” said Pearce.

“If that (the win at the UK Championships) proved to be his last steeplechase I’m super proud of him especially to have run a PB in his last race.

“It was a really special race to have been part of.”

Fortunately there are some very good junior ’chasers emerging and three of our top ones all ran PBs behind Pearce. Henry Yelling (5:51.58), Dillon Millard (5:55.70), who will be racing the European U18 Championship later this month and Matthew Knack (6:11.83) are first, second and fifth in the UK U20 Rankings.

In the women’s race Logan Jolly made a brave attempt to break the American record of 6:09.81 set at the same meeting last year, but the pressure of leading almost the whole way took its toll and she narrowly failed clocking 6:12.18.

“I’ve done a lot of 3k steeplechases this season so it was good to have a go at 2k but that is a tough record,” said Jolly,

“I was trying to use the wavelights as a gauge but just lost it towards the end but it was well worth a try. I felt it was a good effort and it was still a PB for me.”

Stevie Lawrence (6:26.69) and Yasmin Austridge (6:38.34) both clocked PBs in second and third respectively.
