BRITISH MILERS CLUB GRANR PRIX BURY PREVIEW
SO who will step forward and make the headlines in the opening fixture of the 2025 BMC Grand Prix season?
That will be the challenge for some of the best British young runners who have entered the meeting, which is again part of the World Athletics Challenger Series and sponsored by adidas, Sportsshoes.com and Maurten.
“Looking at the entries it is an opportunity for someone who is not in the mainstream to break through,” said organiser Steve Green.
“There aren’t the star names that we saw for opening Grand Prix last year but there is a strong domestic entry and I’m sure we will see some good racing.”
There is certainly a lot of very good young, British talent in the 25 races, encompassing 800m, 1500m, 5000m and the steeplechase, starting at 4.45 and finishing four hours later.
For example, the women’s 800m A race boasts two under 17 runners, three under 20s and one at U23 level with two seniors, including Khahisa Mhlanga who is the fastest in the field with a lifetime best of 1:59.35.
Mhlanga opened her outdoor season with a 2:09.42 victory in the BMC Gold Standard races at Watford recently and will be looking to push on from that this weekend.
Junior Eleanor Strevens just missed her PB when clocking 2:06.59 to finish runner-up in the BUCS Championships at the start of the month and looks poised to attack that 2:05.93 which she ran at the UK Championships last year.
The men’s 800m A race also looks wide open and it will be interesting to see how new BUCS champion Ben Gardiner, who set a PB of 1:47.56 to lift the title at Sportcity at the start of the month, fares.
Also look out for Salford veteran Harry Wakefield, who has just joined the over 35s ranks, as he has his sights set on a very fast time.
Fellow Salford Harrier Evan Grime had a fantastic season last year and it will be interesting to see how the teenager fares in the 1500m A race, which again looks hard to call.
The women’s 1500m A race boasts five juniors and four U23 runners with Jess Bailey, who finished eighth in the 3000m at the World U20s Championships in Peru last summer, among those running.
Bailey was third over 1500m at the BUCS clocking 4:23.33 so she will be looking to go faster with one eye on her 2024 PB of 4:18.82.
BUCS champion Sarah Calvert, who was runner-up at the Watford GP last summer, has started the season strongly having also won the mile at the Loughborough International last weekend so is definitely one to watch as well.
