BMC GRAND PRIX WATFORD REPORT

Report

WHAT a night of racing!

The British Milers Club 3000m records for both men and women were broken by Simas Bertasius, claiming the Lithuania national record and Georgie Grgec eclipsing the previous records held by Andrew Butchard and Jessica Judd respectively.

Furthermore, in-form veteran and latecomer to the sport Harry Wakefield added the British M35 record to his CV, finally toppling none other than Dave Moorcroft.

In addition, Italy’s Marta Zenoni ran the fastest women’s 800m of the GP season in a PB time of 1:59.79 while Shairkira King ran an Age 16 best of 2:00.95 in finishing third in the same race. It has also been confirmed she ran an Age 16 best of 4:11.78 for the 1500m at the Birmingham University GP last month.

Meanwhile in the men’s 800m Willam Rabjohns soared to the top of the European U20 Rankings and No 2 on the UK All-Time List – nudging ahead of David Sharpe and Steve Ovett – with a sparkling lifetime best of 1:45.41 to win his first Grand Prix A event.

In the 1500m Lyla Belshaw ran a BMC Members’ U20 record for a women’s only race clocking a PB of 4:09.13 in third, shaving 0.16secs off Steph Twell’s previous record set in 2008.

And just to underline that quality runs deep in this meeting, let’s not forget a BMC record of 14 personal bests from 15 finishers in the men’s 3000m – and the other guy ran a season’s best as well!

Little wonder that respected commentator Geoff Wightman, who was working on the Vinco coverage of the event, affectionately referred to the meeting as the ‘Watford Diamond League’ and the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the BMC adidas/Sportsshoes.com Grand Prix Series.

Yes, it was that good a meeting on a night that offered arguably the best conditions you could ever desire as a middle distance runner in the UK.

“Is there anywhere better in Europe to be racing this evening?” asked Wightman. Probably not.

Rabjohns certainly set the tone with the manner of his win in the 800m, unleashing a terrific finish to overhaul leader Reece Sharman-Newell and Ben Gardiner, who was rewarded with a PB in second.

And what a picture Rabjohns’ face was after he crossed the line and looked across at the clock to see that he had smashed his previous best of 1:46.98.

“I couldn’t belive it,” said Rabjohns. “I thought I was in PB shape but did not expect to go that fast, hence the face!

“I was fortunate at the start as after 200m a gap opened up for me and I was able to slot into a perfect position. Then Reece pushed it on and I was able to sit behind him and Ben until 700m and then went for it. It was a perfect scenario for me.”

And one he took full advantage as did six of the top seven all clocking PBs with the top six all finishing inside 1:46.5.

Likewise, the winners of the B, C, E and F races – Ted Higgins, Nirobi Smith-Mills, Raihan Lenoire and Fraser Lupton – all won with lifetime bests.

Also interesting to note that the winners of the top five men’s races all finished inside 1min 50secs, which may also be another BMC first.

The women certainly matched the men with Italy’s accomplished 1500m runner Marta Zenoni (recent PB of 4:01.52) showing that her previous 800m time of 2:01.80 was definitely under-valued as she powered down the home straight to hold off Isabelle Boffey and win in 1:59.79.

“That is our first two minutes time for the women this summer so we are delighted to see that,” said BCM GP director Tim Brennan.

Zenoni also has a British connection as she is currently training in Cambridge under the guidance of coach Matthew Yates.

“I want to thank everyone in my group at Cambridge and I am very happy being there,” said Zenoni, who next will be racing the mile at the London Diamond league.

Boffey ran a season’s best of 2:00.05 with King continuing her fantastic season in third in a time that lifts her to sixth on the UK All-Time U20 Rankings – and remember she is a first year junior and is only celebrating her 17th birthday tomorrow (Monday July 17th). A nice way to mark that occasion and many congratulations from everyone at the BMC.

“I had raced an 800m two days and got a PB (2:01.45 at the BMC Regional meeting at Loughborough University) so coming to Watford I thought I would just try to race it and win some money,” said King.

“I was really pleased and I was not expecting to get the Age 16 record. I only found out about that afterwards and it was nice to get in my final race as a 16-year-old.”

Fellow Junior Bethany Trow won the B race in a PB of 2:05.70 while Emma Powell (D race) and Amy Clarke (E race) also set lifetime bests of 2:09.27 and 2:11.37 respectively.

Sarah Calvert’s progression in the GP 1500m races this summer has been impressive. Third at Bury (4:14.85), second at Birmingham (4:11.26)  and now her first A race win at Watford, dipping under 4mins 10secs for the first time with a lifetime best of 4:08.15.

“I believe my progress this season has been largely down to my coach, Luke Gunn,” said Calvert.

“I trust that he knows what he is doing and going to get me into peak form at the right time, after his success with other athletes.

“I’m very happy with how much I’ve improved this year as I had a few years of very little improvement and lots of time out with injury so this feels like a nice reward for sticking at it and all the hard work on the elliptical and the bike over the years.

“I do see more room for improvement this year though as I led a lot of the race last night. I’m much more used to a sit and kick type race where I’m following others!”

Calvert also echoed the words of many of the runners last night as to why they rush to enter the Grand Prix series.

“The Grand Prix series has formed a large part of my season this year as you can always be guaranteed a high quality field and great pacemaker,” she added.

“I’ve raced at the Watford track a few times now and I really like it. It feels very sheltered from the wind and the warm weather definitely helped.”

Runner-up India Weir was rewarded with a PB of 4:09.04 while 18-year-old Lyla Belshaw moved to sixth on the UK All-Time U20 Rankings with her 4:09.13 in third.

“It was really good conditions last night and I am very happy with my time,” said Belshaw.

“I am now running an 800m in Switzerland on Tuesday and then I’ll decide what I will run at the trials. But this season I have preferred the 800m as I was injured in the winter and didn’t do the work for the 1500m but we will see.”

The men’s race saw a PB for Will Barnicoat but the field didn’t break 3mins 40secs after a reluctance to follow the pacemaker so no-one else managed a PB.

Barnicoat unleashed a terrific last lap to secure victory in 3:40.02 and surely it is only a matter of time before he cracks that barrier.

In contrast the B race featured 11 PBs from 16 finishers including winner Michael Power (3:40.56) and GB international Rory Leonard in sixth (3:42.54. Leonard later went on to run the 3000m and added another PB of 7:55.75 so a good evening’s work for him.

There were also 10 PBs from 17 finishers in the D race with the winners of all the supporting races all clocking lifetime bests; Power, Ryan Elston, Xavier O’Hare, James Alexander and Frederick Cooper respectively.

Not so many PBs in the 3000m steeplechase races but as Brennan pointed out the value of the events that the BMC stage should not always be measured just on times.

“It’s not all about record performances,” explained Brennan.

“I was really pleased to see good size fields in the men’s and women’s steeplechase as this is an event we want to support and develop.”

Now to the grand finale of the meeting and the last race of the evening, the men’s 3000m. Still a balmy 23/24C the stage was set for a fast race with Brennan having long expressed his hope that Butchart’s BMC record, set on the same track four years ago, could be threatened.

And so it proved with a combination of excellent pacemaking and Harry Wakefield’s aggressive tactics ensuring that the pace stayed right on the wavelights schedule of 7mins 45secs.

Bertasius took off in the closing stages to ensure he got ahead of the lights and ensure his decision to opt for Warford rather than a race in Finland was entirely the right one.

“I found this race and I know races in Great Britain are always strong and people are running brave,” said Bertasius.

“I was aiming for a great result but I did not expect weather like this! It was a special evening.”

Bertasius was also well aware of the historical significance of his run, breaking the 43-year-old old mark of 7:42.07 set by Romas Sausaitis in 1982.

“My wife and friends were watching the race so it was big day not just for me but for Lithuania as well,” he added.

A big day, too, for Harry Wakefield who finally added the British Masters M35 record to his success at 800, 1500m and the mile as he finished runner-up in 7:47.20 to smash Dave Moorcroft’s record of 7:50.50 set 36 years ago – before Wakefield was even born!

“It was my second bite of the apple after Loughborough (where he ran 7:51.62) so I thought I would give myself one more chance,” said Wakefield.

“Conditions were amazing and everyone on the start line was up to running fast, which was great. A special thanks to the pacers for setting us up so nicely and then the Lithuanian guy.

“When he went by me with 500m to go I could sense he was on a different level, he was so strong. But it was nice to have someone like that in the race and it gave me someone to chase in the closing stages.

“I am delighted but I am done now!”

It was also impressive to see the top 11 runners all break eight minutes

The women’s race had already set the stage for the men with another record-breaking win by Georgie Grgec. Her time of 8:53.30 beat Jess Judd’s 2021 mark of 8:52.73 for a women’s only race; Laura Muir ran 8:37.23 in a mixed race indoors seven years ago.

Grgec, who has lived in London for the past eight years, competes for Herne Hill Harriers and is a New Zealand international, finished full of running to smash her PB by over five seconds and fully justify her late decision to run.

“I am very glad I was let in to race as a late entry,” said Grgec.

“Originally I was going to race overseas but did not get in and I didn’t realise there was a 3k on at Watford, which was my own fault really.

“But it worked out very nicely and having two pacers with India taking us to 2k was fantastic. It was then a case of pushing on from there and using the wavelights.

“I didn’t know about the record either so that is nice to know.”

The determination to run hard and fast saw six of the top seven record PBs.

“It was a super evening and a great atmosphere at Watford,” added Grgec.

It was, indeed, an evening to remember.
