BMC GRAND PRIX TRAFFORD REPORT

NUMEROUS records have been broken in a terrific summer for the Adidas/Sportshoes.com British Milers Club Grand Prix incorporating the World Athletics Challenge, but for its uniqueness Cameron Boyek’s might be hard to beat.

In his 43rd BMC race of his career, which started way back in 2011 when he won the 1500m E race in the Grand Prix at the Sportcity Stadium, Manchester, 31-year-old Boyek won the 1500m A race in a lifetime best of 3mins 35.51secs.

How many runners get to do that over such a long period of time?

Maybe that’s a record but what is certain is that Boyek’s success is the quickest 1500m winning time of the Grand Prix season this summer and is the fifth fastest in BMC history.

Amazingly that’s just over five seconds quicker than he ran 10 years ago when he won the Grand Prix A race at Sportcity and while that may seem like slow progress it hardly reflects the trials and tribulations that Boyek has endured in his career since then.

“Basically I have suffered just too many injuries and illnesses,” said Boyek. “At times it felt like every year or so I was injured.

“So, to come out and run so well and feel strong was a weird feeling, it was quite nostalgic really. I have had people messaging me, like my old friend Charlie Grice, saying how the hell did I do that!”

With just 19 races to his name over the past seven years it is little wonder that Boyek had become a forgotten man among his peers so his renaissance is a tribute not just to his talent, now guided by the experienced coach Alan Storey,  but also his sheer persistence and dedication.

“I am training well and now at the age when I take nothing for granted so if I am feeling good then why not go for it,” added Boyek.

“I still get a buzz from racing well and while I would have liked to have run quicker at Trafford, say 3:34, I was happy. I will have a chat with Alan but maybe next I’ll go to Tooting because that looks like it will be a class race.

“And if I am feeling good I’ll have a go. After all my disappointments, what’s the worst that can happen?”

Boyek’s refreshing attitude after so many setbacks is so encouraging to hear for all runners, especially those who have been in the sport a long time.

Boyek tasted success early in his career but Holly Dixon has had to wait for her first Grand Prix A success so her victory in the women’s A 1500m was equally as popular.

Dixon has competed in all five Grand Prix races with a record of second at Bury, fourth at Birmingham University and second at Loughborough, all over 1500m. She switched to 800m at Watford and was runner-up then finished the series in style edging a super battle with Emily Simpson to win a PB of 4:10.56.

“I was really hoping for sub 4:10 because I know I am fit enough to do it at the moment but I am still happy with a PB and a win,” said Dixon.

“I am hoping to be able to do it before the season finishes.”

The women’s A race was remarkable in that all but one of the 11 finishers recorded lifetime bests – and the 11th was a season’s best.

“The organisation was really good and I think Hannah paced our race very well and the wave lights helped massively,” added Dixon.

“Of all my Grand Prix races this was the best because it was a PB and a win. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Trafford and it was fun to battle with Emily all the way to the finish.”

In the supporting 1500m races a special mention to Fife’s Ben Sandilands, who broke his own World T20 Para record with a time of 3:44.90 to finish runner-up in the B event. Sandilands’ previous best and record was 3:45.40 last season set when winning the gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Paris.

Remarkably the winners of the other seven 1500m races all notched up lifetime bests so big congratulations to Gianluca Mastrolonardo, Colin P Smith, Jospeh Scanes, Joshua Mungin, Finlay Goddard, Angus Cole and Jacob Smith.

Of those Jacob Smith’s result probably caused the biggest stir as he smashed his 2023 indoor PB of 4:03.49 by nearly 20 seconds with an impressive time of 3:46.67, leaving him virtually six seconds clear of the field.

But it was his first 1500m of the season and only his second race outdoors – a 1:55.90 for 800m in May was the other – so while the seedings were probably right Smith can expect a promotion next time he enters!

There weren’t as many women’s 1500m races but the quality was still evident as teenager Holly Cross led home the B race in a PB4:24.40and the next women likewise ran lifetime bests.

Similarly Jess Salis led the top three women in the C race to PBs as she won in 4:32.89.

“Cameron and Holly’s wins were terrific and I was delighted with the standard of the 1500m,” said meeting organiser Steve Green.

“To get a 50 per cent PB rates (150 from 300 finishers across 32 races) in the final Grand Prix was tremendous and I am really happy with that. It is great to return to Trafford after two years and see that the new track is still producing fast times.”

To cap a tremendous evening both Boyek and Dixon returned home with £500 prizes as well.

Lucy Armitage’s verdict after winning the women’s 800m A race in a PB of 2:00.96 was emphatic.

“I am still in shock!” said Armitage, whose previous PB was the 2:03.02 she ran in the semi finals of the FISU World University Games last month.

“The plan this season was to get under 2:05 and originally I intended to race the 1500m but after my first 800m I decided to switch.”

Certainly no regrets there for the 21-year-old Manchester Metropolitan University student, who admitted her return to her home city after a brief spell at Leeds Beckett Uni, has given her the opportunity to work closely again with coach Dave Rodgers has been instrumental in the success of this season.

“It is crazy that two years ago I was running 2:10 in an E race (at the Sportcity Grand Prix, third in 2:10.64) and even last year I couldn’t get into an A race,” added Armitage.

“I would love to run under two minutes but maybe I should end my season on a high and leave that until next year.”

Behind Armitage it was good to see Khahisa Mhlanga run a season’s best of 2:01.69 while Ava Lloyd continued her progress with a PB of 2:02.57 in third.

The 800m runners didn’t get the best of the conditions so the only other winner to PB in the supporting races was junior Lauren Creaby with 2:10.81 in the D race.

Archie Davis can take encouragement from his season’s best of 1:46.55 to not only win the men’s A race but also defeat Reece Sharman Newell, who recently finished sixth in the Novuna UK Championships.

“I had a disappointing one at the trials and came away pretty angry with that so it was good to get back straight away and win the race,” said Davis.

“I haven’t run 1:46 since 2021/22 so happy with that. Nice to dip on the line!”

Davis will now look at another 800m at Tooting, targeting 1:45 before another fast 1500m before the end of the season.

Local runner Andrew Thompson, coached by BMC President Norman Poole, was third in a PB of 1:46.77.

Ryan Elston looked impressive in winning the B race with a PB of 1:47.17 while Nirobi Smith-Mills and Finlay Hutchinson in second and third respectively matched that.

There were also PBs for Caleb Mcleod, Isaac Rothwell,  Jude Ryan, Ben Pucill, and Henry Evans in the C, D, F, H and I races respectively.

Simas Bertasius produced one of the highlights of the season when he set a BMC record and Lithuanian national record to win the 3000m at Watford so he choose to make his debut at 5000m at Trafford.

The national record of 13:17 was the dream target and that was always a long shot but 13:37.01 was a respectable effort as he again beat M35 veteran multi record holder Harry Wakefield, who was rewarded with yet another PB of 13:48.85.

Talking of PBs the B 5000m produced an astounding 21 lifetime best of the 22 runners. Maybe another record?

All six runners in the women’s 5000m, led by Norwegian Anna Marie Nordengen Sirevag, ran PBs as did Zoe Hunter in the 2000m steeplechase.

The BMC is grateful to all the athletes, officials, helpers and all the venues who have supported the GP this season.
