MEN’S 800

What a great four days for Reece Sharman-Newell. On Wednesday evening the 20-year-old Basingstoke & Mid Hants runner turned up for the BMC Gold Standard meeting at Birmingham University and in his first race since returning from America and the busy collegiate season ran a PB of 1:45.54.

Then on Saturday he followed up that with his third quickest time ever of 1:45.60 to secure his first Grand Prix victory.

“Once I ran the PB on Wednesday then Saturday was all about winning and to run two 1:45s back-to-back is very nice,” said Reece-Sharman.

“Thomas (Randolph) took it out hard but I knew he’d be feeling it going through so fast as I did a 50.2secs split at the NCAAs recently.

“I think the lactic hit him at the end and I felt for him but I’m feeling so strong at the moment having come back from altitude.

“Now it is the trials race next weekend and there a couple of fast lads around at the moment but I’m focussed on getting that first GB vest, getting some accolades and some silverware in the cabinet.”

Randolph paid a price for his committed effort as he just got caught for second place by Alex Botterill with the City of York athlete following up his win at Sportcity with a PB of 1:46.31, shaving 0.21secs off his 20021 best .

There were season’s bests for James McMurray and Piers Copeland in fourth and fifth respectively.

Miles Butterworth of Brighton Phoenix was agonisingly close to breaking 1min 50secs for the first time but can’t be too unhappy with his time of 1:50.01 for second in the C race as it clipped 2.23secs off his 2021 best and lifts him to fifth in the UK U20 Rankings.

Sixth in those rankings is now Elliot Savage as the Sale Manchester Harrier clocked a season’s best of 1:50.18 for third in the B 800m, which was won impressively by Walton’s Nicholas Landeau in a season’s best of 1:48.82.

Newham & Essex Beagles’ Victor Nutakor won the F race in 1:54.67 which is the fastest time in the UK so far this year by a masters in the over 35 age group.

WOMEN’S 800

Khahisa Mhlanga is still only 23 but seems to have been racing at a top level for many years now. Indeed, go back five years to the Loughborough Grand Prix and as a junior she finished third in the 800m A race in 2:04.34 then a couple of weeks later lifted the English Schools’ title, her fourth national title in five years.

So the talent has always been there and this season Mhlanga really seems to be putting everything together as she won on Saturday with a PB of 2:00.87 to finally eclipse her 2020 best of 2:01.91 and go seventh on the UK Rankings.

“It has been a long journey!” said the 23-year-old.

“I have had problems with injuries and illness and I had a period when I worked for six months as a teacher in a primary school and just went down with everything and missed the whole winter.

“Now I have found a much better balance to my life with a part-time job that is not so exhausting and I’m able to also focus upon my training.

“Now my training has been more consistent and I am really enjoying my running.”

Mhlanga certainly showed evidence of that at Sportcity where she finished a fine fourth in the record-breaking race that saw records for Aussie Abbey Caldwell and Northern Ireland’s Ciara Mageean and Loughborough was another big step forward as she went through the bell in 59.5secs and then powered clear of her rivals down the back straight.

By the finish the 2017 European U20 800m champion was over three second clear of the U23 pair of Steph Driscoll and Molly Hudson, whose time of 2:04.51 was a PB .

“Sportcity was an amazing race to be in and I was happy with that as well as Saturday,” added Mhlanga.

“I’m getting closer to breaking two minutes and hopefully I can do that soon, maybe in the Watford Grand Prix. I’ll also do the 800m at the British Championships and after that will run some 1500m races as well.

“But for now that’s my best run of the year so far.”

Basildon’s Isobel Ives won the B race in 2:09.76 but the C race was even quicker as Lily Saxon showed why she is enjoying her first taste of Grand Prix racing.

At Sportcity the Solihull & Small Heath junior runner finished runner-up in the E race in a big PB of 2:10.17 and on Saturday leading impressively from the front sliced 1.25secs off that with 2:08.92 to win the C race.

MEN’S 1500

Finally free of the debilitating effects of the glandular fever which wrecked his summer last year Archie Davis is enjoying his running again and showed with his victory in the A race what a formidable athlete he is.

In a very competitive race Davis unleashed a very strong last lap, hitting the front in the final 200m before celebrating victory in is first 1500m of the season in 3:41.28.

Okay, that is still some way off his lifetime best of 3:37.92 which he set in 2021, a year in which he represented GB at the European Indoor Championships and the Super League Team Championships and also ran his 800m PB of 1:44.72 in the Stockholm Diamond League.

It was also the year in which he enjoyed his last BMC Grand Prix win over 800m at Stretford – until this weekend. But all being well Davis is firmly on the way back.

“Last year was tough for me,” said Davis.

“After a good 2021 I got into higher level meetings in Europe but things were just not clicking and I was shutting down in the home straight of every race so I had some blood tests and they came back with glandular fever.

“So I had to take off the whole of July and August  and then I started back slowly and had a good winter.

“Now I feel I’m just getting back to where I was and I’m getting used to racing again. It is nice to get a 1500m on the board and I wasn’t expecting it to be lightning quick but I felt strong.”

Davis will hope to get close to PB form as the season progresses but chasing him home on Saturday was just the incentive the next five runners – James Henegan, Joseph Tuffin, Jeremy Dempsey, Luke Shaw and Tendai Nyabadza – needed as they all ran lifetime bests.

Nyabadza’s time of 3:42.33 was particularly impressive as that time puts the 17-year-old – he doesn’t turn 18 until August –  top of the UK U20 Rankings and seventh on the European lists.

Nyabadza has run three 1500ms this season, all BMC events and has improved his PB on every occasion – and all have been inside the European U20 Championships qualifying mark of 3mins 45secs..

Carrying over a PB of 3:47.86 from his win in the C race at Sportcity last year Nyabadza opened with 3:46.77 at the BMC Gold Standard meeting at Trafford on May 16th, improved to 3:43.78 for sixth at the Sportcity GP and now is up to 3:42.33 after another sixth place.

“So far it has been a good start to the season for me,” said Nyabadza. “I have been chipping away at my times and I’m hoping I can go faster still.”

Next up will be the National U20 Championships when a good result should secure him selection for the European U20s.

The first three in the B race – Max Heyden, Daniel Brookling and junior Sam Mills – all ran PBs with Mills narrowly missing the European U20s qualifying target of 3:45 by 0.78secs.

There were 15 PBs and 15 season’s bests in the C, D and E races with AFD’s Will Barnicoat particularly impressive in winning the D race in 3:44.60 as he dipped inside 3mins 50secs for the first time.

WOMEN’S 1500

There was no more popular winner at Loughborough than Jessica Warner-Judd as she not only demonstrated her fearless front-running style but also her sheer determination to finally shake off New Zealand’s Rebekah Greene.

Bear in mind that this was Warner-Judd’s first race since winning the British Championships and World trials10,000m title at Parliament Hill in May while her only other track race was a 15:13.95 5000m in America at the start of last month.

“It was a bit of an unknown for me today and I wasn’t sure how I would feel,” said Warner-Judd.

“I felt fine until 1100m and then I had to kick a bit earlier than I normally would. But it was nice to drop down and I enjoyed it.”

Warner-Judd will now head to Oslo to race a 3000m before switching her attention to the British Championships.

“I will probably focus on the 5000m at the British Championships but the main aim this summer will be the 10,000m at the Worlds. Everything is geared towards that.”

Greene just about held onto second from a fast-finishing Alexandra Millard with the Invicta East Kent U23 runner shaving 0.09secs off the mark she set at Birmingham University four days early – so again going inside the European U23 qualifying target of 4:14.

U23 rival Sarah Calvert of Livingston was also inside that mark with her PB of 4:13.17 in sixth and the pair are now second and third fastest in the U23 rankings.

There was an outstanding win for Ella Greenway in the B race as the Cleethorpes runner took charge from 800m and then powered clear of the field to win by virtually six seconds in 4:14.56.

That time was notable for so many reasons. First and foremost, it shattered Greenway’s previous PB by eight seconds and immediately lifted her to No 1 in the UK U20 Rankings.

Furthermore, to just underline the quality of her run it is also the fastest junior time in Europe so far this season, which obviously augurs well if the 18-year-old opts to run the distance at the European U20 Championships in Jerusalem in August – assuming she confirms selection in the national championships next weekend.

“I was quite surprised actually as I was just hoping to run inside the European U20 qualifying time (4:22.0) but it was a lot faster than that!” said Greenway.

Greenway also has the qualifying standard of 2:06.00 for the 800m – she has done that twice this summer including a fifth place at Sportcity in 2:04.60 plus her PB of 2:40.30 at the Loughborough International the previous weekend.

No doubt she would welcome a return to Israel having placed fourth in the 800m at the European U18 Championships in Jerusalem last year.

“I will speak to my coach and then decide what I will run at the trials,” added Greenway.

There was also a notable performance from 16-year-old Wolverhampton & Bilston runner Isobelle Jones as she finished third in a PB of 4:21.32, which is inside the Commonwealth Youth Games qualifying standard if 4:25.0. It puts her fourth in the UK U17 Rankings.

Banbury’s Isla McGowan in fifth also ran inside that standard with a PB of 4:24.0.

MEN’S 5000

Alfie Manthorpe of Sheffield & Deane came through strongly in the closing stages to claim his first GP victory in the men’s 5000m with the 23-year-old slicing over four seconds off the time he set when placing second at the Trafford GP last year.

His winning time of 14:00.07 was agonisingly close to that 14 minutes landmark and afterwards coach John Wood said there was a clear way forward for Manthorpe to improve again.

“He needs to believe in himself,” said Wood.

North Belfast’s Andrew Milligan ran a PB of 14:01.86 in second with Hugo Milner clocking a season’s best of 14:03.95 in third.

Swansea’s Jonathan Butler won the B race in 14:36.45, slashing 17 seconds off his 2021 PB. Remarkably it was his first appearance in a BMC Grand Prix for 14 years – in August 2009 he won the 800 E race at Cardiff in 1:53.91. Welcome back Jonathan.

WOMEN’S 5000

North Somerset AC’s England 5k road champion Ellis Wallace won her first GP A victory in some style finishing virtually four seconds clear of the field in 16:03.84.

Four of the top six ran PBs, including Winchester’s Helen Hall whose time of 16:25.80 is the fastest by a W35 runner in the UK so far his summer.
