REPORT

IF ever a race summed up the modern ethos of the British Milers Club then it was the record-breaking men’s 3000m at the Loughborough University Grand Prix sponsored by adidas and Sportsshoes.com

“The BCM is there to give opportunities to anybody whatever their pathway or age,” said BMC CEO and Grand Prix director Tim Brennan.

“So, it was great to see a fantastic under 20 athlete racing the final lap against a 35-year-old talent. That is what we are about and if you are good enough for the A race then you will be included.”

Spectators were treated to a real duel in the sun between 18-year-old Birchfield Harrier Aron Gebremariam and 35-year-old Salford Harrier Harry Wakefield.

The pair had a great battle before Gebremarian, who is Eritrean by birth but now lives in Birmingham after leaving his country as a refugee, surged clear on the final lap to win in a time of 7mins 48.77secs.

That not only broke his own BMC U20s record of 7:52.54 set last year but is also the fastest time in the World this year so far.

Wakefield was rewarded for his tenacity by recording a PB of 7:51.62, which was just a fraction outside David Moorcroft’s veteran M35 GB record of 7:50.50 set 36 years ago – before Wakefield was even born!

“Aron and I would both like to thank Harry for making that a true race,” said Dave Lawrence, who is Gebremariam’s coach.

“Things are going well for Aron but that was only his 11th race on the track. He is learning all the time but his big problem is his legal status.

“Obviously this issue is a political melting pot at the moment and we are just focussing on his running.

“He is an exceptional, young talent and could have a great future but for now we just look at the next race and nothing more.

“And he is safe, has a roof over his head, food and is going to college to study.”

Gebremarian found a kindred racing soul in Wakefield, who has already notched up British M35 records over 800, 1500m and the mile this season.

As a latecomer to the sport after previously playing football and then cycling for fitness Wakefield has an unencumbered, refreshing attitude to racing.

“I don’t have many years to play with at the sharp end so I just want to go out there and run fast times,” said Wakefield.

“If there is any hesitation then I’ll take it on and that is why it ended up in a two-man race between me and Aron.

“I did have half an eye on Moorcroft’s record and was probably still on for it until the last lap when I paid for my earlier efforts and just didn’t have enough on the day.”

As for the for the age gap Wakefield could only offer a rueful reflection.

“I would not have minded picking up the sport at 18 to be honest but I have left it late in the day,” he added.

But he is sure making up for lost time.

In the same race a word also for junior Michael, who ran a PB of 8:09.43 in seventh to dip inside the European qualifying standard of 8:10.0.

Another athlete who has shown an amazing range of racing skills this season is Emily Parker.

She has already notched up personal bests over 3000m steeplechase (9mins 47.41secs, UK No 3) and 5000m (15.33.85, UK No 12) – and at both distances she is ranked No 1 in the U23 age group.

Her 5000m PB was recorded when winning the Grand prix at Birmingham University and now she has back-to-back GP wins after a superb victory in the 1500m, slashing almost eight seconds off her previous best with a time of 4:09.63 (UK No 12).

“I have run well over 5000m and the 3000m steeplechase so I thought I was surely due a PB over 1500m,” said Parker.

“I sat at the back of the leading pack at the start and only took the lead on the final lap. I was shocked to run 4:09!”

Parker now has the qualifying standards for the European U23 Championships in all three distances but she is clear-cut on which event remains her priority this season.

“I will run the 3000m steeplechase at the trials next week,” she added.

“I have already been picked to run the 5000m at the World University Games but this 1500m win has definitely given me a lot of confidence.

“In recent races I have managed to run a strong last lap and that is important so hopefully I should be okay for the trials and get an automatic spot.”

Also in that race Holly Dixon an a PB of 4:12.36 for second while in her first 1500m of the season – and only her second race this summer  – junior Lyla Belshaw recorded 4:13.84 to become the ninth U20 runner to dip inside the qualifying standard of 4mins 20secs for the Europeans so that will be a cracking race to watch next weekend.

Another young woman heading to the age group championships in fine form and her confidence high is Ava Lloyd.

The 1500m remains her focus this summer having already improved her PB to 4:07.45, seventh fastest in the Uk and No 1 among her U23 contemporaries.

And on the evidence of her victory in a PB of 2:02.66 Lloyd’s leg speed is in good shape.

“The conditions were perfect for the 800m at Loughborough and I am really happy with my PB,” said Lloyd.

“I have been working hard on my 1500m so I knew I would have to work my way through the field as I wouldn’t have the speed of the other girls for that first 200 metres.

“And it was great to have that fight at the end as we all pushed each other over the finish line.”

It certainly was an exciting finish with Loyd just holding off Emily Simpson and Helen Braybrook, both of whom ran PBs of 2:02.72 and 2:02.93 respectively. In fourth Rebekah Newton of Australia also ran a PB of 2:03.33.

“I love racing BMC events as I have run most of my personal bests in them,” added Lloyd.

The men’s 800m A race couldn’t quite deliver the same level of PBs but GB international Reece Sharman-Newell completed a fine few days backing up his mid-week win at St Mary’s (1:46.33) with a solid 1:46.48 to edge out Elliot Savage (1:46.76) and Jamie Phillips (PB 1:46.80).

“That was fine because I feel like I am into a second season now after focussing on the 1500m in America,” said Sharman-Newell, who is a student Stateside and ran a PB of 3:39.71 in April

“I took some time off after coming back and I’m now fine-tuning for the second season where the 800m is definitely the focus. It is a long season and I am confident I will be running a lot faster.”

Meeting organiser Bill Foster was particularly delighted to see the strength in depth of the 800m fields with 10 men’s races and six women’s.

“It was good to see that the B race was won in 1:47.44 (James McMurray) with plenty of PBs behind him and the C race in 1:48.99 (a PB for Alex Glew),” said Foster.

“And there were also some really close, exciting races like the women’s 800m A. I think it was a good meeting and everyone seemed to enjoy it.”

There was a sub 3:40 winner of the men’s 1500m with Biruk Aduna Kebede, coached by BMC President Norman Poole, clocking a PB of 3:39.44 with the next 12 runners all breaking 3mins 44secs.

Unlike the men’s 3 000m no records were broken in the women’s equivalent but that shouldn’t detract from the top four all setting lifetime bests led by Ireland’s Ella Fennelly (9:17.87) with her compatriot Danielle Donegan runner-up (9:20.46).

Junior Eliza Nicholson was third with her PB of 9:22.05, lifting her to sixth in the UK Rankings and inside the European U20s qualifier of 9:25.0.
