LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY GRAND PRIX REPORT

IT IS not often that the winner of an Adidas/sportsshoes.com Grand Prix E race causes a stir but Jacob Smith’s 1min 47.50secs certainly did that on Saturday.

‘That’s crazy!” said A race winner Arlo Ludewick, who was clearly impressed with Smith’s victory in a big lifetime best.

Ludewick himself clocked 1:46.50 to win the A race, just 0.01secs off the PB he ran to win the BMC Gold Standard race at Trafford the previous Tuesday.

“I think he might be in the A race next time,” added Ludewick.

Indeed, Smith’s time would have placed him sixth in the A race behind Ludewick, Callum Dodds, Dave Race, Joshua Mungin and Thomas Keen plus his time would have won all the other 800m races.

And this from a 23-year-old whose official PB was 1:49.69 set over two years.

So where did that come from?

“The Power of 10 does’t show anything but I have been racing in the States this year having spent one semester at Albany University after finishing four years at Durham University,” explained Smith.

“I ran indoors and outdoors and had bests of 1:49 and 3:42 but I don’t blame the BMC for putting me into the E race!

“I actually put down a target of 1:47.5 but they probably thought I was being a bit optimistic.

“But I was determined to go for it and the pacemaker did a great job. And I was lucky that for my race the wind seemed to die down as we hit the back straight. I don’t think other runners were so lucky.

“Obviously I am really delighted and hopefully next time I can get into an A race. I’m looking forward to racing the best guys and trying to back up what I achieved on Saturday.”

Smith’s performance certainly rates well compared to Ludewick’s first Grand Prix competition in 2021 when as a 21-year-old he finished runner-up in the 800m D race at Eltham in 1:53.18.

He has come a long way since then under the expert guidance of coach – and BMC President – Norman Poole and this was his second GP win of the season after his super 3:37.48 triumph at the Trafford GP in May.

“It was a similar time to Tuesday but the conditions were windier at Loughborough and it was a strong domestic field,” said Ludewick.

“We were three or four wide coming down the home straight and I was hurting and it wasn’t pretty to look at but I think I just got Callum with my lean on the line, although at the time I wasn’t sure who had got it.

“It was a good win ahead of the trials next week when the minimum aim will be to make the final of the 1500m, as I have never done that before.

“Then if I make the final I will try and compete with the top guys and put myself in a position to do well and try to win it.”

Khahisa Mhlanga also made it two wins out of two starts in the 2026 Adidas/sportshoes.com Grand Prix series having opened up with victory at Trafford.

On Saturday she was again up against UK U20 No 3 Bethany Trow, who won at Birmingham University and once again the pair finished one-two with Mhlanga finishing strongly to clinch victory in 2:04.49.

“It was pretty windy so I tucked in and then kicked in the last bit and I was just grateful to get this race in before the British Championships where I would like to make the final,” said Mhlanga.

Trow continued her consistent GP form – a PB of 2:03.37 at Trafford then 2:03.42 to win Birmingham and now 2:05.02 for second – leaving her well placed for further success.

Molly Hudson has always been a big supporter of the BMC programme so she won’t forget June 13th in a hurry as it was her first Grand Prix victory at her 13th time of asking.

Still only 23 Hudson showed great maturity in how she won the race, explaining afterwards that she switched mindset to make sure she headed to the British Championships with a timely confidence boost.

“I didn’t think it was a night for fast times as it was windy and Loughborough isn’t super fast for middle distance runners,” said Hudson, who regularly trains on the track.

“I decided to run my own race and concentrate on trying to win. I have been chasing a fast time to qualify for the Commonwealth Games (4:05.8) and I think I have been guilty of over-thinking things.

“This time I wasn’t worried about the time and just focussed on racing. I sat off the leaders early on but with 600-550m to go felt strong and decided to take it on.

“It felt really good to win and that’s a nice confidence boost ahead of the British Championships next weekend.

“Also, that is my third fastest time ever which is crazy considering the conditions and everything.

It is also my first Grand Prix A race win. I mean last year I was struggling to get into the A race and the last time I was at Loughborough for a BMC race I ran 4:22 (a regional meeting in July 2025) and was having an awful season.

“It just shows I have come a long way and it is good to remember that perspective. I have to be happy with that and now I am very excited about next weekend. I just need to get through the rounds and then who knows what might happen in the final.

“But for sure it is going to be very tough.”

Hudson powered clear of the field on the final lap to finish four seconds clear of Australian Zoe Toland with Ireland’s Neasa Ni Ainifein smashing her PB by over 12 seconds in third.

Colin P Smith certainly had a worthwhile trip over from Ireland as he slashed four seconds off his PB with a perfectly executed victory in 3:40.55.

The 23-year-old Mullingar runner arrived with a PB of 3:44.17 from Belfast last month so he was delighted with that big improvement.

“I’m over the moon with that,” said Smith, who gradually worked his way through the field before unleashing a strong finish to edge out Brhane Gebrebrhan by 0.15secs with UK No 1 U20 Ethan Newell third in 3:40.80, just outside his PB of 3:40.28 set when winning the Grand Prix at Birmingham University.

In the men’s 3000m City of Norwich runner Michael Clark dipped inside the qualifying standard of 8mins 02secs for the World U20 Championship with a lifetime best of 7:59.22 for fourth place.

That slashed just over 10 seconds off his 2025 PB and lifted him to second in the UK U20 Rankings behind Oliver MacDonald.

The top five runners all broke eight minutes with Ossama Meslek claiming victory in 7:53.78.

The winner of the B race was also significant as Finn Maclennan’s time of 8:17.67 was inside the 8:24 qualifying standard for the European U18 Championships.

In the women’s race both Beth Lewis (9:28.12) and Poppy Guest (9:31.99) both ran inside the European U18s qualifying mark of 9mins 35secs finishing sixth and eighth respectively.

South Africa’s 2022 World Junior 1500m finalist Danielle Verster was the runaway winner of the women’s 3000m in a fine time of 8:56.87, 20 seconds clear of the field.

It was the 22-year-old’s first sub nine minutes clocking, eclipsing her previous best of 9:03.88 set indoors three years ago.
