REPORT

A British M35 record in the 800m, two qualifying standards for the FISU World University Games and a superb UK U20 No 1 performance were among the highlights for the opening Grand Prix of the season at Bury.

Starting with the latter first, teenager Jessica Lark produced a magnificent effort to win the 1500m A race in a sparking personal best of 4mins 11.36secs.

That slashed almost six seconds off the PB she recorded during the indoor season and not only lifted the 17-year-old straight to the top of the Uk U20 Rankings but was also well inside the qualifying standard of 4mins 20secs for the European U20 Championships.

Interestingly it puts her 10th in the All-Time Rankings for the distance, edging out her training partner Ava Lloyd in the M11 Track Club of Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, who ran her lifetime best of 4:12.07 last year.

“I’m still on Cloud 9!” said Lark, 24 hours after that performance. “I knew I was fit and I have been training well but it was my first race of the season.

“I was more excited than nervous to get racing again and I am so happy. I can’t believe that time!”

Lark’s training with the M11 group has to be fitted around her school commitments – currently mid-way through A Levels – but she said a recent training camp in South Africa really helped her.

So with the season now underway in such a spectacular fashion Lark can realistically look towards the European U20 Championships in Finland, in August.

“That is definitely the target and I’d like to do well there but first I have to make the team,” added Lark.

“We have such a strong age group and the fact that we already have six girls with the qualifying standard is a good thing. “

But Lark has thrown down an early-season marker and looking at the quality of the athletes in her training group there is every reason to believe that the Bury Grand Prix win on her debut in an A race – this time last season she placed 12th in the 1500m B race at Sportcity when she was going through a tough spell – will represent the moment when another exciting, young middle-distance talent emerged through the BMC programme.

Which is what the BMC is all about.

It was also encouraging to see in that same race there were PBs for fellow juniors Jess Bailey and Isobelle Jones, also well within the qualifying standard of 4:20 plus PBs for seniors Holly Dixon, Ty Brockley-Langford and Megan Harris.

The top two in the men’s 800m race were both delighted with their evening’s work. Ben Gardiner won his first A race in 1:47.06 which clipped 0.5secs off the 22-year-old’s PB set at the start of the month when winning the BUCS title.

“I couldn’t risk not going off with the pacemaker and it becoming tactical so I just went for it and I’m really pleased with that time,” said Gardiner.

“I have now won the 800m at the BUCS indoors and outdoors so I am hoping I might get selected for the World University Games. I think I am in with a shot and it would be nice to get a GB vest before I become a senior. I’ll just have to wait and see what happens now.”

While Gardiner committed himself from the gun runner-up Harry Wakefield admitted afterwards he struggled with the early pace and only grabbed second after a strong finish to overhaul the Sale Harriers pair of Elliot Savage and Andrew Thompson.

But Wakefield had plenty of reasons to celebrate as his PB of 1:47.46 was a new British M35 record, carving 1.82secs off his previous best set last year.

“I’m really pleased as I now have the British M35 records at 800m indoors and outdoors, the 1500m (3:40.35 last August) and the mile (3:58.42) from the BMC Bannister Miles earlier this month,” said Wakefield.

“Most of the M35 records were held by Anthony Whiteman who was so dominant and after a few years away ran even faster as an M40.”

In contrast Wakefield is a convert to the sport having progressed through team sports, into cycling in his late 20s and then finally into running working with coach Ian Grime.

“I came into the sport late and this is just my third season as a track runner but I love it and I’m hoping to race the European Masters in Madeira, but it’s not until October so I’ll have to have chat with Ian about that.

“In the meantime I just want to run as fast as I can on the domestic circuit and I’d like to get the 3000m record next.”

Seven of the nine finishers ran PBs with junior Joshua Mungin just missing the Euro U20s qualifying standard of 1:49 with his PB of 1:49.68.

Like Gardiner, 19-year-old Eleanor Strevens is a student at Birmingham University and she was also delighted with her first A race success in the 800m with a PB of 2:05.61.

“I will be aiming for the 1500m (she has the qualifying having run 4:14.61 in Belfast) so the 800m is a back-up and I’m pleased with that time in less than ideal conditions,” said Strevens.

“I definitely feel there is more to come this season.”

Afterwards meeting organiser Steve Green paid special tribute to the efforts of both Ben and Eleanor.

“They not only both ran really well to win their A races but then offered to do some pacemaking duties as well and that really helped us and the other athletes,” said Green.

Millie Wills revealed she also has one eye on the World University Games after smashing her PB by nine seconds to win the women’s 3000m steeplechase in a time of 10:15.50, finishing over 40 seconds clear of the field.

That lifted the 23-year-old to eighth in the UK Rankings so that certainly puts her in contention for selection, although places for the World Games are limited.

“I have applied because it would be a great experience but we will have to see,” said Wills.

A delay to the start of the steeplechase after problems with the water jump didn’t help Wills and she definitely feels there is more to come this season.

“I think I can go quicker and the aim is to get as close to 10 minutes as I can,” added Wills.

“I won’t run a ‘chase now until the Watford Grand Prix in July (she ran her previous PB at the meeting last year) so hopefully that will a very competitive race with more women around me and better weather.”

Elsewhere in the men’s 800m B race juniors James O’Brien, Tobias Cheesbrough and Jack Kinrade all finished within a second of the Euro U20s qualifier while the C race was won by 16-year-old Magnus Riddell in a PB of 1:50.78.

It was Riddell’s third PB of the year and he has now progressed from 1:55.37 last year to 1:53.48 indoors then 1:52.98 in the BMC Regional meeting at Leeds and now finally edging even close to breaking 1:50.

It was also encouraging to see teenagers Alistair Street and Ray Taylor win the D and E races respectively with juniors Fraser Lupton and Jude Ryan winning the F and G races.

U23 runners Katie Johnson and Valentina Costa won the 800m A and B races respectively.

BMC President Norman Poole would have ben pleased to see Arlo Ludewick win the men’s 1500m A race with another one of this athletes, Biruk Aduna Kebede, runner-up.

Adam Brown, junior Oliver MacDonald, Ross Harrison, George Phillips all notched up PBs to win the B, C, D and E 1500m races respectively. Juniors Hannah Kinane and Maisey Bellwood recorded PBs to win the women’s B and C 1500m races.

There were good wins for Jack O’Farrell and Cosmo Benyan after competitive races in the 5000m A and B races respectively with Sweden’s Elsa Sundqvist finishing well clear of the Ireland pair of Claire Fagan and Roise Roberts in the women’s 5000m.

“Overall it was a good meeting with 49 per cent PBs even though the conditions weren’t helpful, especially early on,” added Green.

“It was encouraging to see some news names emerge and hopefully they will push on and have a really good season. Thanks again to the team at Bury Athletics Club who hosted their second BMC  GP in the space of 9 months after their debut fixture last Augus
