WHAT an amazing finale to the 2024 BMC Grand Prix World Challenger Tour.

On a thrilling night of athletics – mirroring the amazing competition on the track in Paris at the Olympic Games – two BMC records were broken on the super-quick track at Bury, hosting a Grand Prix for the first time.

American Cooper Teare and Canadian Kevin Robertson, who only flew in on Wednesday and is returning home on Monday, took the honours in the men’s 1500m (3mins 33.96secs) and 3000m steeplechase (8m:24.37) events respectively.

Teare’s stunning run in the 1500m, beating the BMC record of 3:35.04 set by Nick Griggs at Tooting last month, completes an amazing week for the Silver Track Club in Virginia. Back home in Blacksburg, America, Teare trains with new Olympic 1500m champion Cole Hocker under coach Ben Thomas at so what a time they are enjoying.

“It is my first time in the UK and a BMC meet and to get a BMC record is great,” said Teare, who boasts a lifetime best of 3:32.16.

“It was a good night for it; a loaded field and a really great crowd. I had fun and it was a great night.”

Teare only linked up again with Hocker over the winter having previously been based with in Oregon with Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club. His decision to move east saw Teare re-united with his college coach Thomas, who led him to the US 1500m title in 2022.

As Hocker said in a recent interview with American magazine Citius: ‘Without making it too cringe, I feel like we (Hocker and Teare) definitely lift each other up in the best ways – we’re both competitive, and that shows in practice, but also the chemistry is so obvious.

‘It feels like there’s not much of a difference from the Oregon days.’

So from Bury to Paris the Americans from the Virginia Silver Track Club are stamping their mark on the 1500m in 2024.

“Not really sure which one you would rank higher but a pretty good week for us!” added Teare, who is planning to stay in Europe for the next month and find some other top races.

No such luxury for Candaian runner Robertson after his winning time finally broke one of the oldest records on the BMC books, Christian Stephenson’s 8:25.37 set 24 years ago.

“I came into UK on Wednesday, return to Canada on Monday and back to work on Wednesday so a quick trip but I’m very grateful and super happy for it,” said Robertson, who also sliced four seconds off his personal best.

“I feel amazing! I’m super grateful for this opportunity. Two weeks ago I was in Belgium and did a pretty good race but knew I had more in the tank so I talked to my coach and found this opportunity and here I am today with a PB and BMC record, that’s all I could ask for.”

The presence of two high quality athletes like that clearly helped their rivals. In the steeplechase UK Championships silver medallist Will Battershill fully played his part in ensuring a true-run race and was rewarded with a time of 8:25.95, his fifth time under 8:26 this summer to underline his consistency.

“We have made a lot of effort to make the steeplechase races work better this season and I think that has started to pay off,” said BMC Grand Prix director Tim Brennan.

“It was good to see one of the BMC’s oldest records being broken tonight and Will had a very good run too which is very encouraging to see.”

While Teare’s 3:33 put him a class apart in the 1500m the British pair of James West and BMC Indoor 3k champion James Gormley chased hard and were rewarded with a season’s best and an outright PB respectively.

Also encouraging to see Osian Perrin, who opened his season with a PB of 3:46.54 for ninth place at the Sportcity GP, clock a PB of 3:38.84 for seventh at Bury as the top 11 runners finished inside 3mins 40secs.

In the 1500m C race William Rabjohns, who will be racing the 800m at the World U20 Championships in Peru, smashed his PB with 3:41.79 for victory and a nice confidence boost. The time lifts Rabjohns to third in the UK U20 Rankings and was also inside the World Juniors qualifying standard of 3:42.00.

“I had not run a 1500m for a while so knew I had a good PB in me and I’m very happy with that,” said Rabjohns.

“I’m looking forward to Peru now in the 800m. It should be good.”

There were eight 1500m races in total and other notable winners included Ellis Hetherington in the F race (PB 3:51.57) and Myles Fraser in the H race (PB 3:57.75), while in the B race the top nine all ran inside 3:45, led home by Baldvin Magnusson (3:40.62).

Hannah Nuttall has been a regular winner on the BMC circuit in the past and while this was her first appearance this summer normal service was resumed with a narrow victory in the women’s 1500m from Cari Hughes and Kate Axford.

“This was my first 1500m of the season so I just wanted to see what I could do,” said Nuttall, who ran for GB in the 5000m at the European Championships finishing 10th and then added the UK title.

“I am happy to get the win and now I race 5k on the third and hopefully get a PB and then a 3k. I am very excited with those as well.”

Nuttall’s winning time of 4:07.16 certainly compares well to her lifetime best of 4:05.66 set last year and she also dragged Hughes and Axford to PBs.

In the men’s 800m the big story of the day came in the C race. Blustery conditions early on didn’t help the two-lap runners – fortunately it died down later – and neither Ramon Wipfli of Switzerland or Welsh international Piers Copeland broke 1min 48secs as they clocked 1:48.1 and 1:48.01 respectively in the A and B events.

But as Green explained Rick Van Riel of the Netherlands had other ideas as he raced to victory in a PB of 1:46.77.

“Rick was a late entry on Thursday and while we don’t normally accept entries that late someone had also just dropped out so that gave him a place to run,” said Green.

“Then he got himself a flight to Manchester and ran terrifically. I think it may have also been a track record beating the time we had at the Gold Standard meeting last month.”

It was indeed faster just eclipsing the 1:46.94 of Leeds City’s Ossama Meslek so Van Riel was understandably delighted with his efforts.

“I broke 1:47 for the first time and I had been trying to do that for a long time already and to do it here now was amazing,” said Van Riel.

“It was my first UK race, obviously all new and it was very exciting to race here.”

A mention also for teenager Samuel Henry, who ran a PB of 1:52.50 to finish second in the E race and move up to sixth in the UK U17 Rankings.

Khahisa Mhlanga has clearly enjoyed racing in Greater Manchester this summer. Back in May she finished sixth in the Sportcity GP in a time of 2:02.10, still her season’s best while on Saturday she won the 800m A race in 2:02.30. her second quickest time of the year. It was her fourth Grand Prix win over the past three seasons.

There were few PBs to note in the women’s 800m but Dublin City junior Gemma Galvin, in only her second race at the distance in her inaugural season, ran a lifetime best of 2:11.04 to win the C race

“I have been injured for a lot of the season and just come back to run 800m,” said Galvin. “Today was really nice to have a pacer and push it on in the first lap. A lot of Irish races are slow on the first lap and then it is a burn-up.”

There was a strong Dutch presence in the men’s 5000m with Bran Anderiessen and Jurjen Polderman enjoying a one two and clocking PBs of 13:38.18 and 13:50.01 respectively with Ireland’s Sean Tobin third.

Racing his first 5000m on the track this summer Harry Wakefield smashed his 2023 PB by over 16 seconds as he dipped well inside 14 minutes for the first time finishing fourth and top British athlete.

Kevin Schauwaers and Sem Serrano delivered a Belgium one-two in the B race while the British trio of Luke Davis (14:51.79), Andrew Warburton (14:52.90) and Joshua Birmingham (14:55.18) all notched up PBs in a clean sweep for the C race. Indeed, the top seven of that C race all recorded lifetime bests.

Coach Trevor Painter has been enjoying a great week at the Olympics in Paris but no doubt he would have taken a close interest in the women’s 5000m won by another of his athletes, Eloise Walker of Edinburgh AC.

The Scotland Commonwealth Games runner and GB cross country international was racing for only the third time on the track this summer due to injury problems so should take considerable heart from her win in 15:35.92.

“I treated it as a tactical race, sit in at first and I went a bit earlier than I wanted with a kilometre to go so I’m happy I managed to hold on, get the win and pay for my holiday!” said Walker.

“I had a good spell at San Moritz with my training partner Hannah (Nuttall) and that gave me a lot of confidence in me that I can do well over 5k as before it was quite a scary distance for me and in the past!

“Nice to finish strong here this evening with a negative split rather than just fading.”

It proved to be a good night for the Canadian steeplechase runners as Robertson’s countrywoman Grace Fetherstonhaugh won the female event in a season’s best of 9:40.45, virtually eight seconds clear of Jessica Furlan, another Canadian.

“It was fun to race somewhere new although there were some familiar faces in the race who I raced in college so it was a lot of fun,” said Fetherstonhaugh

The meeting opened with two 400m hurdles races with victories for U23 athletes Onyeka Okoh (52.48secs) and Orla Brennan (61.00secs).

“The 400m hurdlers were very happy to get the opportunity to race like the middle distance runners do and I hopefully they enjoyed the experience,” added Tim Brennan.

Finally a last word from meeting organiser Steve Green.

“It is not often you get one BMC record in a meeting so to get two on the same night at a new venue as well was fantastic,” said Green.

“Full credit to the BMC team and all the athletes, they did a great job. Likewise Bury AC, who hosted the meeting for the first time, were brilliant and did a cracking job for us.”
