BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY GRAND PRIX REPORT

ANOTHER sparkling performance from teenager Freddie Rowe was arguably the individual highlight of the second Adidas/sportsshoes.com British Milers Club Grand Prix on Saturday.

The Havering runner smashed his personal best by over four seconds, lowering it from 3mins 44.62secs to 3:40.26 to finish third in the 1500m A race.

It puts Rowe second on the UK Age 17 All Time list, just a fraction outside a certain Steve Cram (3:40.09) – and we all know how his career panned out.

Furthermore, Rowe only just missed the BMC U20 men’s record of 3:39.77 set by George Couttie at Tooting two years ago. Needless to say, Rowe’s time was well inside the European U18 Championships qualifying standard of 3mins 52secs and also inside the World U20s mark of 3:43.

“I think a lot of the boys were going for the same time so it was a great race for me and panned out very well and the PB was probably better than I thought I would do,” said Rowe.

“The European U18s is the main goal for the season for me and next I’ll have to go to the trials and do a job there.

“I am not sure about the World U20s and whether the selectors would take me. I think I would have to win the Euros for that to happen as I am one of the younger ones. To be honest it would be a big bonus so I am not stressing out about it at all.”

As for just missing that Cram mark, Rowe was pretty sanguine.

“I would be more than happy if I ended up like Steve Cram!” he added.

The race was won by BUCS champion Dan Galloway, recording his second PB in a week after posting 3:42.35 for victory at the IFAM meeting, Brussels, the previous Sunday.

On Saturday he improved to 3:40.02 and it must only be a question of time before the 21-year-old joins the sub 3:40 club.

“Over the past few years I have suffered from a lot of niggles and injuries and this summer is the first time I have come off a good winter,” said Galloway.

“It is good to get some decent races under my belt and now I want to see how fast I can go this season. I want sub 3:40.”

Rowe’s near miss for the BMC U20 record was replicated in the men’s 5000m and women’s 3000m steeplechase.

Meeting organisers Luke Gunn and Dean Millar, along with Grand Prix director Tim Brennan, had worked hard to attract a class field for the inaugural Buds Fast 5000m, organised to honour the great coach and BMC supporter, who has been forced to step back from the sport due to illness.

Baldaro would surely have appreciated the effort by men’s winner Jacob Cann as the 25-year-old powered clear of the field to win in 13:29.18, slicing over four seconds from his PB.

“I am very happy with that,” said Cann.

“To be honest I wasn’t expecting it as I have had a few niggles since the road relay season and not been training that well.

“It was really good to get under 13mins 30secs and I had one eye on the England qualifying standard for the Commonwealth Games (13:25) but that was a stretch tonight.

“I’m just very pleased to have won the race and now I will hope for another good run at the UK Championships”

Brennan added his praise to Cann’s performance in a race that saw the top four finishing inside 13mins 50secs and 10 runners break 14 minutes.

“We wanted this meeting to progress standards in the 5000m and the steeplechase and I think we did that,” said Brendan.

“It was the best 5000m we have had for almost two decades and then the steeplechase races saw some terrific runs from our juniors with Commonwealth Games qualifying standards as well as Will going sub 8:30”.

“I think we definitely have something to build upon and take that forward now.”

The quality of Cann’s run was underlined by the fact it was only a fraction off Kris Bowditch’s BMC Members record of 13:28.22 set at Battersea Park 26 years ago!

The women’s 3000m steeplechase witnessed a mature and perfectly-paced effort by 18-year-old Tilly Nickell, who has clearly benefitted from working with new coach Luke Gunn.

Laying off the early pace she finished very strongly to win in a PB of 10:13.75, which was inside the World U20s qualifying standard of 10:15. She is the second Brit after Ava James (10:06.78) to have achieved that goal.

“These were new tactics for me because previously I have shot to the front as quickly as I could because I don’t like following people over the barriers,” said Nickell.

“But Luke told me to pace my effort and it worked perfectly. The last lap was tough but I had something left for the last 200 metres.

“And I think that was my best hurdling in a race.”

Nickell just missed the BMC U20s record of 10:11.76 set by Pippa Woolven 14 years ago.

The men’s steeplechase witnessed a really positive and strong run by Will Battershill, who was forced to go it alone after the withdrawal of rival Mark Pearce with injury.

The original goal had been for the pair, both coached by Gunn, to attack the European Championships qualifying standard of 8mins 20secs but on his own that proved too much for Battershill, though he still managed a season’s best of 8:29.41.

“That’s inside the Commonwealth Games standard but really that is irrelevant, it is 8:20 I am after because I still haven’t done that yet,” said Battershill.

He will have another go at the UK Championships at the end of June.

Behind Inverclyde’s Pete Bradshaw smashed his PB with 8:38.52 leaving him tantalisingly close to the Scotland qualifying standard of 8:36 for the Commonwealth Games.

In addition, Taunton AC’s 19-year-old Dillon Millard carved almost three seconds off his PB with 8:48.76 to finish fifth – with the top seven breaking 8mins 50secs and 11 beating 8mins 55secs.

Millard’s time is again well inside the World U20s qualifying standard of 8:55 and he is comfortably top of the UK U20 Rankings this year.

In contrast to Cann’s runaway win the women’s 5000m came down to a great last-lap battle between Hannah Irwin and Charlotte Dannatt. The latter kicked first and quickly opened a gap but Irwin didn’t panic and then unleashed her own kick  to secure a thrilling victory.

“I just stayed calm,” said Irwin.

Irwin had an outside chance of making the Northern Ireland team for the Commonwealth Games but reckons those hopes are now slim.

“I am 10 seconds off the standard for the 10,000m and five for the 5000m and with only six athletes being sent I don’t think they will take me,” she said.

In the 800m Bethan Trow secured her first GP win in 2:03.42,a fraction slower than the 18-year-old’s PB of 2:03.37 for second at Stretford.

“I am hoping to get to the Worlds but I know the women’s 800m is very competitive,” said Trow.

“I need to stay consistent and train well because it is a long season. Hopefully I can go even quicker.”

In sixth place 17-year-old Mollie Grant leapt from fourth in the UK U18 Rankings to second with a season’s best of 2:05.51, which was inside the European U18s qualifying mark of 2:06.

She also beat Ezrah Harrold, who is currently the No 1 in the UK U18s with her PB of 2:05.48. Harrold finished eighth in 2:06.49.

For men’s 800m winner David Race it was his first Grand Prix A victory so a season’s best of 1:46.82 seemed very appropriate.

“In a lot of races before I have had the mentality of sitting in and kicking and then wishing I had committed earlier,” said Race,

“But today the plan was to make sure I was right on the pace and go for a fast time and it was pleasing to get my first A win.”

It was his second quickest time ever behind the PB of 1:45.68 he recorded for second place in the same meeting last year.

Kilbarchan’s 18-year-old Josh Mungin improved from fifth at Stretford to second behind Race clocking a PB 1:48.13, frustratingly just outside the World U20s qualifying standard of 1:48.00.

In fourth teenager Charlie Chambers, the current No 1 in the UK U18 Rankings, followed up his PB of 1:47.77 at Trafford with 1:48.20 for third equal. It was the 16-year-old’s second fastest time ever.

India Weir’s focus for the season will be be the 5000m, in which she finished runner-up at the UK Championships last year, so this win over 1500m was a very good sharpener and a good confidence boost after only finishing 18th in the 5000m at the IFAM meeting, Brussels, the previous weekend.

“I came down from altitude and raced straightaway at Brussels and it didn’t work for me,” said West.

“That was disappointing so it was nice to bounce back with the win today. I know I’m in PB shape (for the 5000m) and after a few more weeks of training at sea level but we’ll se how it goes at the UK Champs.”

In the women’s 1500m B race 15-year-old Maisie Mullett shaved almost two seconds off her PB with 4:22.56, just a shade away from the European U18s qualifier of 4:22.
