BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY REPORT: DRAFT

A NEW Grand Prix season always offers the chance for a new name or two to leap forward and grab the headlines and 23-year-old Sam Charig did just that on Saturday evening.

It wasn’t just the fact that his new-found confidence earned him victory in 3mins 37.21secs, shaving 0.07secs off his previous PB and lifting him to eighth in the UK Rankings, but also the performance underlined his progress he has made in recent years.

Because it was just three years ago that Charig made his debut on the Grand Prix circuit winning the E race at Watford in July in a time of 3:47.39.

“I suppose 10 seconds and winning the A race is a good improvement!” said Charig.

“I was a bit of a late-starter to running and only started running more as a 16/17-year-old. Before then I was in a sprint group once a week and played football.

“But after my GCSEs I got more serious about running and trained harder. For the first few years I seemed to suffer a few injuries but for the past two years I have become more consistent and I had a solid winter before coming into this summer.”

Three back-to-back PBs have been Charig’s reward clocking 3:37.54 in Brussels on May 25th, 3:37.28 in Karlsruhe six days later and now 3:37.21.

“I could not have done much better on Saturday,” added Charig. “Hopefully that will give me a good chance of selection for the World University Games because that would be a great experience for me.”

It was encouraging to see that behind Charig a further seven runners broke 3mins 40secs with a further five, including runner-up Thomas Bridger whose 3:37.95 was inside the European U23 qualifying standard of 3:38, notching up lifetime bests.

A special mention, too, to the amazing over 35 veteran Harry Wakefield for clocking 3:38.57 in fourth to improve his own British Age Group record. Wakefield ran a GB M35 record of 1:47.46 at Bury last month.

Another athlete making a name for herself this summer is Emily Parker. Before Saturday the 20-year-old’s only Grand Prix win had been in the 1500m B race at Loughborough last season.

Parker has one eye on getting selection to run the 3000m steeplechase at the European 23 Championships as she is the quickest in the age group with her PB of 9:47.41 in Brussels last month, putting her third in the UK Rankings overall. That time is also well inside the qualifying mark of 9:55.

But at Birmingham she opted to make her debut over 5000m on the track and that decision must be considered a resounding success. Her time of 15mins 33.85secs not only gave her victory by almost five seconds from Charlotte Dannatt but was also well inside the qualifying standard of 15:40 for the European U23 Championships.

“I had raced the Podium 5k over five laps on the road which was okay but when I saw six laps to go on the track I thought, gosh!” said Parker.

“I am happy with the time but in my head it was horrible and I thought never again! Running the steeplechase is a completely different type of pain and I don’t know what is worse. They are both equally as hard!”

So, Parker will stick with the ‘chase as the main focus for the Euro U23s but would be happy to race the 5000m at the World University Games if selected.

Jessica Lark has already made a name for herself this summer by winning the 1500m opening Grand Prix at Bury, the 17-year-old clocking a sparkling personal best of 4mins 11.36secs to go top of the UK U20 Rankings.

Lark opted for the 800m on Saturday but the result was the same as she raced to victory again smashing her PB by four second with 2:02.43, well inside the European qualifying standard of 2:04.0 and putting her second on the UK U20 Rankings.

“I am very pleased with that,” said Lark.

“I knew I was in good shape so decided I had nothing to lose and just went for it. I got a little boxed in at one stage but kicked at the bell and then pushed again down the back straight.

“It is nice to know I have that sort of leg speed for the 1500m as it all helps. It is all very exciting for me.”

Lark also offered her praise to the meeting. “It is a really good venue, the track is fast and there is a nice vibe there and the commentator is very encouraging,” she added. “It is such a good facility.”

Lark’s fearless racing helped chasing Lucy Armitage to a PB of 2:03.10 in second, just outside the Euro U23 standard, with a further four of the nine finishers also recording lifetime bests.

Indeed, the meeting as a whole had a great return on the PB front with almost half of all the runners in the 34 races notching up lifetime bests which is a huge credit to the organising team and the squad of pacemakers.

The men’s 800m was also a hard-fought affair with Callum Dodds winning with a season’s best of 1:45.33 – his second quickest ever – and pulling David Race and Ben Gardiner, winner at Bury, to PBs of 1:45.68 and 1:46.39secs respectively in second and third.

For Race that was inside the Euro U23s qualifying mark of 1:46.5 and puts him eighth on the UK Rankings and third quickest U23 behind Justin Davies and Henry Jonas. For Gardiner it was his third PB of the season and he has now improved from 1:48.43 last summer so a great season for him so far.

William Rabjohns might have come in eighth and last but he broke 1:47 for the first time with 1:46.98 to go top of the UK U20 Rankings and dip inside the Euro U20 qualifying mark of 1:49.0.

As did Tom Waterworth, who won the 800m B race in a PB of 1:47.44, chased hard to the line by Joseph Morrison who was rewarded with a PB of 1:47.79.

Hollie Parker has been a big supporter of the BMC programme in recent years and her only previous win had been in the 800m C race at Birmingham University two years ago.

Now she can celebrate her first A race win as she took the honours in the 1500m and in some style too, improving her recent PB set in Los Angeles last month with 4:10.25.

“I am very pleased with that,” said Parker. “I know I am ready for a quick time and I’m feeling a lot strong and my confidence is a lot higher.

“I have had the most consistent block of training ever and just had a good block at Flagstaff at altitude.”

Behind Parker there were some amazing results from our top juniors with Shakira King and Eleanor Strevens both clocking PBs of 4:11.78 and 4:13.41 respectively to go third and fourth on the UK U20 Rankings with Isla McGowan fifth running a season’s best 4:15.97. All of those times are inside the Euro qualifying standard of 4:20.0 making this event one of the most hotly contested in the sport with eight runners eligible so far.

In was close to nine as Evey Powell battled to the line in 4:20.78, also a PB. But just to emphasise seven of the top nine times for the best British junior women this summer have been set in the two Grand Prix events.

In the steeplechase meeting organiser Luke Gunn wanted to get as many men under nine minutes as possible so he should feel pretty happy with the top seven achieving that goal with six of those men running lifetime bests.

Winner Peter Bradshaw set the tone with a PB of 8:46.50, just outside the European U23 standard of 8:40.0 but Dillon Millard beat the European U20s mark of 9:05.0 with his PB of 8:59.69, the first time he has gone under nine minutes.

There was an Ireland clean sweep in the women’s steeplechase with Niamh Kearney, Alexandra Joyce and Rosin Treacy all running PBs. The leading British athlete was teenager Olivia McGhee in fourth with a PB of 10:22.15, which is inside the European U20s qualifying standard of 10:30.0 while fellow junior Millie Gold also achieved that goal. That puts the pair No 1 and 2 respectively in the UK U20 Rankings.

Finally, the men’s 5000m race was won by junior Aron Gebremariam in a PB and BMC U20 members record of 13:36.71 with runner-up Richard Slade (13:59.32) also breaking 14 minutes.
