BMC Academy
THE Academy was formed in January 2005 and currently has well over 500 members who are proud to wear their distinctive vest which is given as part of the joining fee along with BMC News.
It targets athlete’s aged under-20 years and acts as a conduit to the full senior membership of the British Milers’ Club. To join, an Academy standard must have been achieved (see tables).
The Academy provides racing opportunities at our PB Classic Meetings such as the legendary Millfield meeting and the iconic Milton Keynes meeting. There are regular Regional races all over the country and these give the athletes a chance to achieve qualifying standards and their all-important PB’s. There is the annual Frank Horwill and Peter Coe Miles for male and female U17 and U15 which are by invite only which have plaques for the first three in each age group along with the prestigious trophies for the winners.
The annual Residential Training Camps have been held at various locations with many benefitting from the unique experience, along with listening to ex-international stars including: Steve Cram, Peter Elliott, Jake Wightman, Jenny Meadows, Tony Whiteman, Lisa Dobriskey to name but a few. However, times move on and it has been decided to cease the national weekends in favour of Regional Training Days. These will hopefully be held in every region where possible, at least twice a year (autumn and spring) with highly qualified coaches giving sessions that are tailored for all abilities which may be an alternative to their usual sessions. All coaches are welcome to learn and get involved and just like the weekend courses, non-members are also welcome. The new format will be at the discretion of the organiser, but will generally revolve around a 10am-2pm time-slot with a training session, drills and/or strength and conditioning plus, if available, a guest athlete or coach for a Q&A session.
The Academy will be closely linked with the coaching section and it is the intention to offer a mentoring service for those who need it.
