Frank Horwill / BMC Research Scholarship 2010 (Closing date 30 Jan 2010)

Outline
The Frank Horwill / BMC Scholarship was established in 2008. The aim of it is to build upon the current work of the British Milers’ Club in the areas of coach education and research.

We wish to encourage original and innovative pieces of research in to middle distance and endurance running. We believe that one way in which we can do this is to make a small amount of funds available to help at least one individual peruse a selected topic or area.

The process is simple – it is a two stage process. The first step is to complete this form and submit by 30th January, 2010. The second stage involves the BMC coaching sub-group who will then shortlist the best applications and then ask these people to a short interview. After this we will inform the successful candidate of our decision and support them to conduct the research in the months and years ahead.

Frank Horwill
Frank Horwill was the founding member of the BMC in 1963. Since that time he has been working tirelessly to promote and develop the Club. One area that Frank has become extremely well known for is his work on research and collating research from around the world on middle distance and endurance running. Some of his work can viewed on the BMC website inside the club magazines. In order to safeguard his tradition, the scholarship has been established.

The British Milers’ Club
The British Milers’ Club is a specialist middle-distance club, which caters for endurance athletes across the UK. We currently have around 5000 members. To become a member you have to be able to run a certain qualifying time, therefore membership is selective. The majority of members are current athletes who are striving to improve their race times and become better racers. The BMC is a major competition provider in the UK. For details of our competition programme visit our website.

As well as competition for athletes, the BMC has also taken the needs of coaches very seriously. We have a coaching strategy and we offer coach education opportunities throughout the year. We believe that better coaches will make better athletes and we also believe that coaches need to be offered the findings of high quality research.

The Research Scholarship
The Scholarship Award for 2010 will be up to £2000. The award will be paid in stages – some at the beginning, middle and end. Once the award has been made you will sign a contract to conduct the research and present the findings to the BMC. The BMC will then part-own the research with the researcher and it will be made available to all BMC members.

Once the research is complete, the researcher will be expected to present their findings to the BMC Annual Conference. On completion you will be awarded a commemorative medallion.
