Derek Ibbotson

The first man to run the Mile in Four Minutes passes.......... A very sad loss of Derek Ibbotson. WR for the mile and also the answer to the question, "Who was the first man to run 4 minutes for the mile?" Frank Horwill always delighted asking that question at BMC weekends and hearing everybody chorus "R G Bannister". He then asked them to listen to the question very carefully. Derek Ibbotson ran 4:00.0 for the mile at the White City Stadium, London when finishing behind Herb Elliott in 1958. The year before he had run a WR 3:57.2 to take 0.8 seconds off John Landy's 1954 WR of 3:58.0. R.I.P.
